Master of Arts of School III

Questions and answers on the professionalisation and master's degree programme of School III

Faculty area (Annex 14 MPO)

What is the faculty area?

In some Master's degree programmes in School III (German as a Foreign Language, English Studies, German Studies, Dutch Studies and Musicology), modules from other degree programmes in School III are offered. From these, a module worth 15 CP must be taken. Modules studied in the faculty area aim to supplement the otherwise disciplinary module content of the Master's degree programme with an interdisciplinary perspective. The faculty area is regulated in Annex 14 of the Master's examination regulations of School III. In Stud.IP you can recognise the modules of the faculty area by the module number beginning with "ipb9".

What is the purpose of the faculty area?

Students gain an insight into the issues, concepts, theories and methods of a linguistic or cultural studies discipline other than that of their chosen degree programme. They should also be given the opportunity to confront the foreign content with the corresponding concepts of their own discipline and thus provide an external perspective that allows representatives of both disciplines to participate in an appropriate form. If appropriate, this confrontation can take the form of group or partner work.

In which degree programmes do I have to study the faculty area?

  • MA German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language
  • MA English Studies
  • MA German Studies
  • MA Musicology
  • MA Dutch Studies

Which modules can I choose in the faculty area?

Annex 14 of the Master's examination regulations regulates the modules that can be selected in the faculty area. A total of 33 modules are available for selection from the subjects of English Studies, German Studies, Integrated Media, Cultural Analyses, Art and Media Studies, Musicology, Dutch Studies, Slavic Studies and Language Dynamics.

You select one module from these. Please also note the information in the table in Annex 14, which regulates in the "Module type" column for which degree programmes the respective compulsory elective modules are not suitable.

How is the faculty area examined?

The possible examinations are regulated in Annex 14 of the Master's examination regulations. The appropriate type of examination is determined by the module coordinator. The examination should give you the opportunity to accentuate the links between your degree programmes. The examination can take place in groups in consultation with the examiner, whereby it is advisable for the group to be made up of representatives from different disciplines.

How is the faculty area marked?

You can decide for yourself whether your examination performance should be marked or simply graded as "passed". If you wish to have the examination marked, you must apply for this before registering for the examination.

Do I have to fulfil certain requirements?

Language skills are only required if the module is taught in a language other than German. If you do not have any other previous knowledge that makes it difficult for you to participate, you should consult with the module coordinator to find out how you can still participate in the module.

How do I register for events in the faculty area?

If you have selected a module in Stud.IP, register for the courses there as usual. The number and form of the required courses can be found in the respective module description in Stud.IP.

If you are unable to register because you do not fulfil the registration requirements in Stud.IP, please contact the module coordinator or module advisor. Please note, however, that you can only select modules and courses in the faculty area that are NOT offered by your own Institute.

Area of specialisation: ipb611-618 (Annex 15 MPO)

What is the area of specialisation?

The area of specialisation of the Master's degree programmes of School III consists of five modules worth 15 CP, of which you select one (see Annex 15 of the Master's examination regulations of School III):

1) Free module (ipb611)

  • After consulting your programme coordinator, you can choose a module of your choice.

2) Writing and Journalism (ipb612)

  • You put together a module from the areas of a) academic writing, b) journalistic writing or c) literary translation.

3) Languages (ipb613)

  • You select 2 consecutive modules from the same language or (if you have the relevant prior knowledge) modules from different languages (1 module must be at least at advanced module level) and complete an additional assignment (e.g. essay) (please note: not possible for all languages).

4) Supplementary (second) module in the faculty area (ipb617)

  • You select a (further) module from the faculty area of School III (see above).

5) Transculturality and Cultural Mobility (ipb618)

  • You select a series of lectures, a course from the Academic English section and either the intensive phase (taking place in September) or 3 workshops of the European Master of Migration and Intercultural Relations

In which degree programmes do I have to study the area of specialisation?

  • MA German as a Foreign Language /German as a Second Language
  • MA English Studies
  • MA German Studies
  • MA Integrated Media
  • MA Cultural Analyses
  • MA Art and Media Studies
  • MA Museum and Exhibition
  • MA Musicology
  • MA Dutch Studies
  • MA Slavic Studies

How is the area of specialisation assessed?

  • Free module (ipb611)
    • The module is completed with at least one examination. The following are possible: Portfolio, seminar paper, oral examination, presentation including written elaboration, practical examination, seminar paper, poster presentation, internet project or other type of examination. A portfolio of achievements is often useful, that covers the courses in a meaningful way. Ask your degree programme coordinator for advice on the form and number of assignments. If you only organise the free module through a single form of course, the portfolio can also only contain a single examination achievement.
  • Writing and Journalism (ipb612)
    • The module is completed with at least one examination. As a rule, you prepare a portfolio of achievements that covers the courses in a meaningful way. Ask your degree programme coordinator for advice on the form and number of assessments. If you only complete the Writing and Journalism module through a single course, the portfolio can also only contain a single examination achievement.
  • Languages (ipb613)
    • You will complete 3 examinations: 1 portfolio for each 6-CP language module and a further ungraded examination (e.g. a report, an essay, etc.) to complete the 3-CP module. If marking is desired, only the two portfolios of the 6 CP modules will be included in the grade at 50% each.
  • Supplementary (second) faculty module (ipb617)
    • You will usually take an examination in a module that you are studying as a faculty module. The type and number of examinations is described in Annex 14 of the Master's examination regulations. The examination should give you the opportunity to accentuate the links between your degree programmes. The examination can take place in groups in consultation with the module coordinators, whereby it is advisable for the group to be made up of representatives from different disciplines.
  • Transculturality and Cultural Mobility (ipb 618)
    • You will produce a portfolio of work.

Is the area of specialisation marked?

You can decide for yourself whether your examination performance should be marked or simply graded as "passed". You make the proposal for this by ticking the box on the module result sheet (see download area on this page). If you wish to receive a marking, the grade (or grades) must be based on at least 9 credit points.

How is performance in the area of specialisation certified?

The certificate is issued in two steps:

1) On the module result sheet (see download area on this page), you enter the courses attended and obtain a signature from the lecturer for the respective examination achievements or active participation. You also tick whether or not you are requesting a marking of your performance.

2) Send the completed module result sheet by email to the Coordination of Studies and Teaching at School III (Nicole Griese and Antje Beckmann): The coordinators will check the information and forward the module result sheet to the Examinations Office.

Do I have to fulfil certain requirements?

In some cases, you may need to demonstrate sufficient language skills to attend certain courses/modules. It is always best to speak to your lecturers.
