Last week, 16 students from the Ammerland vocational schools visited the Department of Anatomy at University Medicine Oldenburg (UMO) to find out about teaching, research and possible career paths in this specialised field. Together with their teacher Julia Engbers, the eleventh-graders explored Prof Anja Bräuer's department with its research focus on molecular and cellular neurobiology and the anatomical teaching content in various thematic blocks.
Of particular interest were the virtual dissection table presented by Ph.D. Christine Maier and PD Dr Veysel Ödemis and the HoloLens - high-end augmented reality glasses with which 3D objects such as anatomical structures can be visualised and placed in the real world. The students were also given an insight into digital learning platforms that visualise the anatomy of the body.
The pupils showed great interest in the topics. They are currently completing a three-year programme at an academic secondary school at BBS Ammerland, specialising in health and care.
