Around 250 guests attended the first ‘Research Day’ organised by School V - School of Medicine and Health Sciences last Friday. Visitors were treated to a varied programme at the Wechloy campus. This included, amongst other things, a talk by Dr Bernward Steinhorst about his work with “Médecins Sans Frontières” and the presentation of the Hermine Heusler-Edenhuizen Prize, which this year was awarded to Dr Sonja Mertsch from the Department of Ophthalmology. There was also a panel discussion with researchers from the School. They discussed the value of research for trainee doctors and how to balance research work with undergraduate studies and specialist training. Furthermore, student Lukas Baumhove spoke about his experiences with the MD/PhD programme in co-operation with the Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG). The programme was chaired by the Vice-Dean for Research, Prof. Dr Anja Bräuer. Between the programme items, there was ample time for the audience to view the 96 research posters on display. Five posters were awarded poster prizes: those by Dr Insa Seeger (health services research), Simon Gerhards (health services research), Jacqueline Taudien (Medicine), a joint prize for Justyna Bozek and Olga Kurzhakova (Medicine and Physical Chemistry), and Pascal Saße (Medical Radiation Physics).
At the end of the day’s events, the School bid farewell to the former Dean of Studies, Prof. Dr Dr Klaus Peter Kohse, who had stepped down from the post last summer semester after more than four years in office. “We would like to thank Prof. Kohse for his tireless commitment to the model degree programme in Human Medicine, the development of the curriculum, and his dedication to the growth and expansion of University Medicine Oldenburg,” said Dean Prof. Hans Gerd Nothwang. Refreshments were provided by the student body. Numerous guests rounded off the informative day with a drink and a bratwurst.
