Registration for the Bachelor's thesis (summer semester 2026)
We would be delighted if you decide to write your Bachelor's thesis in German Studies. For the examiner selection, please take part in the preferred examiner selection procedure. Please read all the information under the following headings. If you have any questions after reading the information, please send an email to Please provide a telephone number where you can be reached, as some questions can be clarified more easily in conversation.
Who is authorised to write first and second assessments for the Bachelor's thesis?
- You can find an overview of the lecturers who are authorised to assess your Bachelor's thesis for the first or second time in a table that you can view or download here.
- When choosing your preferred examiners, it is only a matter of choosing the first examiner. You may therefore select any person from the table who is authorised to carry out the first assessment of Bachelor's theses (in the table: x or a or b). Please note: The table (01.10.2025) represents the status WiSe 2025/26. Here you will find information if there are any changes for SoSe26 that are already known.
Who decides who will be my second assessor?
- The second assessor is determined by the first assessor in accordance with the Institute Council resolution of 14 February 2011 and in consultation with the Examinations Office according to content criteria and taking into account the requirement that one of the two assessors must belong to the group of university lecturers or be a private lecturer. (In individual cases, the responsible Bachelor's examination board may allow the BA thesis to be assessed by two full-time lecturers who are not members of the professors' group or private lecturers, BPO, General Part, § 22 (2)).
- At the latest when you have the registration form, which you must submit to the Examinations Office*, signed by your first assessor, the first assessor must inform you who the second assessor is. You then visit the second assessor during office hours and have the registration form signed by him/her if the current form requires this.
*Note: If you have any questions regarding the admission of your Bachelor's thesis to the Examinations Office, please contact the Examinations Office!
How does the preferred examiner process work?
- The allocation of the desired examiners takes place via Stud.IP - analogous to the registration procedure for the courses.
- There is a separate group in Stud.IP for all lecturers who are authorised to assess Bachelor's theses for the first time. There are as many places in each group as the number of lecturers authorised to supervise Bachelor's theses.
- All groups are labelled with the abbreviation "WPV-BA" (for Wunschprüfer*innenverfahren Bachelorarbeit).
- To find the courses, switch to the relevant semester and simply enter "WPV-BA" in the Stud.IP search. You will then be shown all the courses that you can select for the desired examiner assignment.
- After activation (note homepage and messages via listserver), you can create your priority list with your preferred examiners in Stud.IP by selecting the WPV-BA groups.
Very important: As with the previous paper-based procedure, please include at least 9 different examiners, preferably more, from different components in your priority list. The more preferred examiners you put on your priority list, the higher your chances of getting a place with one of your preferred examiners.
- The date of the lottery procedure via StudIP will be announced on the homepage and via the listserver.
- If you have not been allocated a place with one of your preferred examiners, please contact the office at
- Only after the draw, i.e. when your first examiner has been chosen, do you make contact with him/her to discuss the specific topic of the thesis.
Note: The WPV-BA groups are not the accompanying courses for the BA thesis, but merely groups in Stud.IP, which are used to carry out the desired examiner procedure and thus the assignment of examiners. For information on the accompanying course, see "When do I take the accompanying course for my Bachelor's thesis? Which accompanying course do I have to take?" on this page.
If you have any questions after reading this page in full, please send an email to Please include a telephone number where you can be reached. Sometimes it is easier to clarify a matter by telephone.
I still have to register at the Examinations Office.
What has to be done and when?
What requirements do I have to fulfil?
- The preferred examiner procedure via Stud.IP precedes the registration of the Bachelor's thesis at the Examinations Office. This means that you only register your Bachelor's thesis at the Examinations Office after the Institute has assigned your first examiner in a prioritised lottery procedure. This is where admission to the Bachelor's thesis takes place.
- Withdrawal from the preferred examiner procedure in German Studies is possible at any time without giving reasons. Simply unsubscribe from the relevant WPV-BA group and inform the office at of your withdrawal.
- A change of examiner in the current semester is only possible after the priority lottery procedure on
15 August 2025if there are still free places in the WPV-BA group with the new examiner you have selected in Stud.IP! Please contact the office directly regarding a change.
- Withdrawal from registration at the Examinations Office is subject to the regulations of the Bachelor's examination regulations.
- Furthermore, you do not yet have to fulfil the requirements for writing the Bachelor's thesis required by the examination regulations in order to participate in the desired examiner procedure in Stud.IP. These must only be proven when registering with the Examinations Office!
- If you have taken part in the preferred examiner procedure for a summer semester, you must register your Bachelor's thesis at the Examinations Office by 30 September at the latest (respective registration period 01.04. to 30.09.).
If you have taken part in the preferred examiner procedure for a winter semester, you must register your Bachelor's thesis at the Examinations Office by 31 March at the latest (respective registration period 01.10. to 31.03.)
If it is foreseeable that you will not be able to do this, you will have to take part in the preferred examiner procedure again for the following semester. By the time of the draw as part of the priority lottery procedure (note deadlines), you must therefore know for sure whether or not you will register the Master's thesis at the Examinations Office by 31 March (winter semester) or 30 September (summer semester) in order to participate again in the preferred examiner procedure for the following semester!
--> The Examinations Office would like to point out that a copy of the Abitur certificate must be enclosed with the registration!
When do I take the accompanying course for my Bachelor's thesis? Which accompanying course do I have to take?
- You take the accompanying course to your Bachelor's thesis in the semester in which you write your Bachelor's thesis. Exceptions only apply to components that do not offer the colloquium in every semester (this may be the case for Medieval Studies).
- Students who would like to write their Bachelor's thesis in summer semester 26 in a German Studies component for which no accompanying course is offered in summer semester 26 should attend the accompanying course closest to their subject. Registration for the accompanying course for the Bachelor's thesis (this has a 'normal' course number, i.e. 3.01.xxx) will take place after the draw on
15.08.2025via the office, which you will receive after15.08.2025will write to all students registered in a WPV-BA group to request the necessary details.
Note: The WPV-BA groups are not the accompanying courses to the BA thesis, but merely groups in Stud.IP, with the help of which the preferred examiner procedure and thus the assignment of examiners is carried out.
Please only take part in the prioritised examiner lottery procedure for summer semester 26 if you are writing your Bachelor's thesis in summer semester 26!
Can I write my Bachelor's thesis in each component?
- Yes, you may write your Bachelor's thesis in WiSe 25/26 in any component, including language didactics or literature didactics.
- At this point, we would like to point out the following regulation of the subject-specific annexes for German Studies for the M.Ed. Gym, G, HR, whereby the M.Ed. examination regulations, which are the most recent at the time of your enrolment in the Master's degree programme, are always decisive.
"Students should choose a subject area for their Master's thesis that they have not already worked on in their German Studies Bachelor's thesis. Subject areas include literary studies, linguistics, medieval studies, German as a foreign language, specialised didactics and Low German."- Please note: KJL is not a separate component. KJL belongs to literary studies. So if you are writing your Bachelor's thesis on the subject of Young Adult Literature, you are writing in the Literary Studies component!
- Please note: Media Studies is not a separate component. Media studies is part of literary studies. So if you are writing your Bachelor's thesis in the field of media studies, you are writing in the literary studies component!
If you have any questions, please contact the office by email.
What is the scope of the Bachelor's thesis?
The BA thesis should comprise 75,000 characters (including spaces) +/-10%. The 75,000 characters refer only to the text including the footnotes. The cover sheet, table of contents, bibliography and appendices are not included. (Resolution of the institute council of 24 June 2020).
How long is the processing time for the Bachelor's thesis?
The time from the issue of the topic of the Bachelor's thesis to the submission of the Bachelor's thesis is four months (see § 22 (5) of the general part of the Bachelor's examination regulations, to be found here:
https://uol.de/studiengang/pruefungen/germanistik-2f-bachelor-9.)
(Note/explanation: According to the general part of the BPO, §22 (5), the following applies: "The time from the issue of the topic to the submission of the Bachelor's thesis is a maximum of four months. Further details can be regulated in the subject-specific annexes". Up to and including summer semester 2023, the subject-specific appendix for German Studies contained the sentence "The processing time [for the Bachelor's thesis] is 9 weeks" under point 9. For winter semester 23/24, an amendment to the subject-specific appendix German Studies of the BPO was adopted, in which this sentence was deleted. In accordance with the transitional provisions for the 18th amendment to the BPO, section II, point 1, the changes come into force for all students regardless of when they start their studies in winter semester 23/24. This means that the Bachelor's thesis in the subject of German Studies has been subject to the provisions of § 22 (5) of the general part of the BPO since winter semester 23/24 for all students, regardless of when they began their studies: The processing time is 4 months. If you have any questions about this, please contact the office by email. Please provide a telephone number where you can be reached, as some issues can be clarified more easily in conversation.
I missed the draw date - what now?
You can also register for the WiSe 25/26 after the draw with the first assessors in whose WPV-BA group there are still free places until 29 August 2025 (please note the following information on the accompanying course, 2nd indent, if it has not yet been taken).
Please then register immediately at with the following information, as the Stud.IP office is not automatically notified if someone registers later:
- In which WPV-BA group have you registered?
- Have you already attended the accompanying course for the Bachelor's thesis or do you have to attend it in winter semester 25/26? Mrs Brören will then enter it.
- In which component are you writing your Bachelor's thesis? (This is not necessarily automatic, as some first supervisors are authorised to write first reviews in several components. The information is important for the registration in the corresponding accompanying course by the office).
(You also have the option of putting yourself on the waiting list with a first-time reviewer, provided there are still places available on the waiting list. However, there is a risk that you may not be able to join the waiting list in time if you do not withdraw from the WPV-BA group. Only one entry is possible in total, either where there are still free places or where there are still free waiting list places! All waiting lists will be deleted after 29 August 2025).
You cannot write your Bachelor's thesis in the current semester if there are no more free places in the WPV-BA group of your first supervisor.
If you realise after 29.08.025 that you have missed the draw date, please contact the office directly by email. It must first be clarified whether you can still be accepted and, depending on the time of your request, whether it is still possible to join the accompanying course at the time of your registration.
If you have any questions, please contact the office by email. Please include a telephone number where you can be reached in your email. Some issues can be clarified more easily in conversation.
