Registration for the Master's thesis in German Studies - winter term 25/26

Requested examiner procedure WiSe 25/26
Students who have taken part in the requested examiner procedure for WiSe 25/26 must register their Master's thesis with the Examinations Office by 31 March 2026. Please take into account the holiday period and office hours during the lecture-free period. Make sure you obtain the necessary signatures in good time (at least 4 weeks before 31 March 2026) .

Wish examiner procedure SoSe 26
The "SoSe26" procedure described below is aimed at all students who wish to register their Master's thesis in German Studies with the Examinations Office in the period from 1 April 2026 to 30 September 2026.

We would be delighted if you decide to write your Master's thesis in German Studies. For the examiner selection, please take part in the preferred examiner selection procedure. Please read all the information under the following headings. If you have any questions after reading the information, please send an email to Please provide a telephone number where you can be reached, as some questions can be clarified more easily in conversation.

Who is authorised to write first and second reviews for the Master's thesis?

  • You can find an overview of the lecturers who are authorised to assess your Master's thesis for the first or second time in a table that you can download here.
  • When choosing your preferred examiners, it is only a matter of choosing the first examiner. You may therefore select any person from the table who is authorised to carry out the first review of Master's theses (in the table: x or also a and b). Please note: The table (01.10.2025) represents the status as of winter semester 2025/26. Here you will find information if changes for summer semester 26 are already known!

Who decides who will be my second assessor?

  • The second assessor is determined by the first assessor in accordance with the Institute Council resolution of 14 February 2011 and in consultation with the Examinations Office, based on content criteria and taking into account the requirement that one of the two assessors must belong to the group of university lecturers.
  • At the latest when you have the registration form, which you must submit to the Examinations Office*, signed by your first assessor, the first assessor must inform you who the second assessor is. You then visit the second assessor during office hours and have him/her also sign the registration form if the second assessor's signature is required on the current form.

*Note: If you have any questions regarding the admission of your Master's thesis to the Examinations Office, please contact the Examinations Office!

How does the preferred examiner process work?

  • The allocation of the desired examiners takes place via Stud.IP - analogous to the registration procedure for the courses.
  • There is a separate group (WPV-MA-xxx) in Stud.IP for all lecturers who are authorised to assess Master's theses for the first time. There are as many places in each group as the number of Master's theses supervised by lecturers authorised as first assessors.
  • All groups have the abbreviation "WPV-MA" (for Wunschprüfer*innenverfahren Masterarbeit) as the course number.
  • To find the courses, switch to the relevant semester and simply enter "WPV-MA" in the Stud.IP search. You will then be shown all the groups that you can select for the desired examiner allocation.

  • After activation (note the homepage and messages via the listserver), you can create your priority list in Stud.IP with your preferred examiners by selecting the WPV-MA groups.

Very important: As with the previous paper-based procedure, please include at least 9 different examiners, preferably more, from different components in your priority list. The more preferred examiners you put on the priority list, the higher your chances of getting a place with one of your preferred examiners.

  • The date of the lottery procedure via StudIP will be announced on the homepage and via the listserver.
  • If you have not been allocated a place with one of your preferred examiners, please contact the Registrar's Office at
  • Students of the M.A. DaF/DaZ programme should also refer to the information at the bottom of this page***.
  • Only after the draw, i.e. when your first assessor has been chosen, do you make contact with him/her to discuss the specific topic of the thesis.

Note: The WPV-MA groups are not the accompanying courses for the Master's thesis, but merely groups in Stud.IP, which are used to carry out the desired examiner procedure and thus the assignment of examiners. For information on the accompanying course, see "When do I take the accompanying course for my Master's thesis? Which accompanying course do I have to take?" on this page.

If you have any questions, please contact the office by email after reading all the information on this page. Please include a telephone number where you can be reached. Sometimes it is easier to clarify a matter on the phone than by email.

I still have to register at the Examinations Office.
What has to be done and when?
What requirements do I have to fulfil?

  • The preferred examiner procedure via Stud.IP precedes the registration of the Master's thesis at the Examinations Office. This means that you only register your Master's thesis at the Examinations Office after the Institute has assigned your first examiner in a prioritised lottery procedure. This is where admission to the Master's thesis takes place.
  • Withdrawal from the preferred examiner procedure in German Studies is possible at any time without giving reasons. Simply unsubscribe from the relevant WPV-MA group and inform the office at about your withdrawal.
  • A change of examiner in the current semester is only possible after the prioritisation lottery procedure has been carried out if there are still free places in the WPV-MA group with the new examiner of your choice in Stud.IP! Please contact the Registrar's Office directly regarding a change.
  • Withdrawal from registration at the Examinations Office is subject to the regulations of the M.Ed. or M.A. examination regulations.
  • Furthermore, you do not yet have to fulfil the requirements for writing the Master's thesis according to the examination regulations in order to participate in the desired examiner procedure in Stud.IP. These must only be proven when registering with the Examinations Office!
  • If you have taken part in the optional examiner procedure for a summer semester, you must register your Master's thesis at the Examinations Office by 30 September at the latest (respective registration period 01 April to 30 September).
If you have taken part in the optional examiner procedure for a winter semester, you must register your Master's thesis at the Examinations Office by 31 March at the latest (respective registration period 01 October to 31 March).

This means that all documents for the registration of the Master's thesis must be completed and signed (including by the first examiner) by the registration date, i.e. by 31 March (winter semester) or 30 September (summer semester) at the latest. Therefore, please ensure that you complete the forms and obtain the required signatures in good time (!), i.e. at least one month before the deadline.

If it is foreseeable that you will not be able to do this, you will have to take part in the preferred examiner procedure again for the following semester. By the time of the draw as part of the priority lottery procedure (note deadlines), you must therefore know for sure whether or not you will register the Master's thesis at the Examinations Office by 31 March (winter semester) or 30 September (summer semester) in order to participate again in the preferred examiner procedure for the following semester!

--> The Examinations Office points out that a copy of the Abitur certificate must be enclosed with the registration!

When do I take the accompanying course for my Master's thesis? Which accompanying course do I have to take?

  • Ideally, you should attend the accompanying course to your Master's thesis in the semester in which you write your Master's thesis. In other words, if you want to write your Master's thesis in the winter semester, you should attend the accompanying course in that semester. (It would not be ideal to take the accompanying course earlier, because: If you take the accompanying course in the summer semester, you run the risk of getting a first examiner from a different component than the one for which you took the accompanying course in the desired examiner procedure for the winter semester. In addition, you must already present a concept or similar in the accompanying course for the Master's thesis).
  • Students who would like to write their Master's thesis in a German Studies component for which no accompanying course is offered should attend the accompanying course that is closest in topic.

The WPV-MA groups are not the accompanying courses to the Master's thesis, but merely groups in Stud.IP, with the help of which the desired examiner procedure and thus the assignment of the examiners is carried out.

Registration in the accompanying course for the Master's thesis (this has a 'normal' course number, i.e. 3.01.xxx) takes place after the draw has been carried out by the Registrar's Office. All students registered in a WPV-MA group will then receive further information by email.

Can I write my Master's thesis in each component?

  • The subject-specific appendices for German Studies for the M.Ed. Gym, GH, R, state:
Students should choose a subject area for their Master's thesis that they have not already dealt with in their German Studies Bachelor's thesis. Subject areas are: Literary studies, linguistics, medieval studies, German as a foreign language, specialised didactics, Low German.
  • Please note: KJL is not a separate component. KJL is part of literary studies. Students who have written their Bachelor's thesis in KJL have therefore written it in the Literary Studies component!
  • For students who started their Master's degree programme in winter semester 21/22 or later, the following also applies:
    • Media Studies is not a separate component. Media Studies is part of Literary Studies. So if you wrote your Bachelor's thesis in Media Studies, you wrote it in the Literary Studies component.

If you have any questions, please contact the by email. Please include a telephone number where you can be reached, as some issues are easier to resolve by telephone.

(Resolution of the institute council of 20 January 2021)

***Notes exclusively for students of the Master of Arts German as a Foreign Language/German as a Second Language

Since it can be assumed that you are writing your Master's thesis in the GFL/German as a foreign language component, please include all (!) examiners who have a first reviewer authorisation in the cross table - i.e. all examiners with an 'x' in the column "Master's thesis module, GFL/German as a foreign language component" in the lottery procedure in Stud.IP in your priority list in order to increase your chances of finding a first reviewer from this component.

I missed the draw date - what now?

You can also register for a WPV-MA group after the draw. If the accompanying courses have already started, it must first be clarified, among other things, whether it is still possible to join the accompanying course at the time of your registration.

If you realise that you have missed the draw date, please contact the office directly by email with the following information.

  • Which WPV-MA event would you like to register for?
  • Have you already attended the accompanying course for your Master's thesis or do you still need to attend it? If the courses have already started in the semester in question, you must first clarify whether it is still possible to join the accompanying course.
  • In which component are you writing your Master's thesis? (This is not necessarily automatic, as some first supervisors are authorised to write first reviews in several components. This information is important for registration in the corresponding accompanying course).

You cannot write your Master's thesis in the current semester with first supervisors in whose WPV-MA group there are no more free places.
