Healthy Teaching and Learning at the UOL

The University of Oldenburg’s Student Health Management team was successful with its project idea ‘Healthy Teaching & Learning’ as part of the‘Bewegt studieren 3.0’initiative organised by the General German University Sports Association and the Techniker Krankenkasse. The aim of the project is to integrate exercise and mindfulness more closely into study and teaching. The aim is to support lecturers in incorporating health-promoting methods into their courses, whilst workshops on topics such as mindfulness, stress management, resilience and exercise are offered to students. In addition, an app is being developed to encourage short exercise breaks, and an exercise and relaxation programme is being offered for exam periods.

Students at the University of Oldenburg are warmly invited to take part in the project. If you are interested, please write to: .

Active learning

1.00 pm – 4.30 pm

Exercise Further training Face-to-faceLecturers

Description:
Long periods of sitting and a sedentary teaching environment characterise everyday university life and have a negative impact on both students’ physical health and their concentration and learning performance. Yet physical activity can support the teaching and learning process in a variety of ways. It not only serves to break up the routine but can also be a pedagogical tool for active and sustainable learning. In this course, you will explore the fundamentals and potential of active learning. Alongside scientific findings on the relationship between physical activity, attention and learning, you will be introduced to ways of designing active learning sessions. The course will address both engaging methods for face-to-face and online formats, as well as issues relating to classroom design, the role of the lecturer and how to deal with potential resistance. The aim is to understand physical activity as an integral part of good teaching and to develop concrete approaches for your own teaching practice.

Here’s what you can expect from this programme:

Information on the relationship between movement, attention, cognition and learning processes in a higher education context

An introduction to and hands-on experience of fundamental methods of movement-oriented teaching in various teaching settings

Developing concrete approaches to integrating movement into your own teaching practice

Reflection on the significance of movement as a didactic element for active and sustainable learning

Mindful Teaching

1.00 pm – 4.30 pm

Mindful Further training Face-to-faceLecturers

Description:
Everyday life at university is often characterised by a fast pace, a high volume of information and numerous demands – for both students and teaching staff. These conditions can impair concentration, learning ability and well-being. Mindful teaching offers the opportunity to shape learning processes more consciously, to promote attention and to create an appreciative atmosphere that fosters learning. In this course, you will explore the fundamentals and potential of mindful teaching. Alongside academic insights into mindfulness, attention, stress management and learning, you will discover specific methods that can be easily integrated into various teaching formats. The focus is on brief prompts, conscious transitions between teaching phases, creating an atmosphere conducive to learning, and reflecting on your own role as a lecturer. The aim is to develop practical approaches for a teaching style that promotes well-being, concentration and mutual respect.

Here is what you can expect from this programme:

Scientific principles underpinning the relationship between mindfulness, attention, stress regulation and learning processes in a higher education context

An introduction to and trialling of easily implementable methods for mindful teaching in face-to-face, online and hybrid courses

Developing concrete approaches to integrating mindfulness-promoting elements into your own teaching practice
