About the initiative

‘Active Studying’ is a joint initiative of the General German University Sports Association (adh) and the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK). The aim of the initiative is to embed physical activity and health promotion more firmly in everyday university life and to support universities in creating study and learning environments that encourage physical activity.

Students spend a large part of their day sitting – in lectures, whilst studying, at digital workstations or travelling between different academic activities. At the same time, studying and university life are often characterised by high demands, time pressure and fluctuating stress levels. Physical activity can play an important role in physical and mental health, as well as in general well-being.

The initiative therefore focuses on the various aspects of everyday university life. The emphasis is not solely on participation in traditional sports programmes. Rather, the aim is to enable and promote physical activity even in areas where it has previously played only a minor role, for example during lectures, whilst studying independently or during short breaks.

The initiative is not aimed exclusively at students. Lecturers and university staff can also be involved, as they create the key conditions for shaping study and teaching. Universities are supported in understanding physical activity as an integral part of comprehensive health promotion and in embedding relevant programmes sustainably within their structures.
