Lecturers

Lecturers

The scientific programme will mainly be arranged by staff members of the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) and by two external instructors (Dr. Gabriel Singer, Austria, and Dr. Isaac Santos, Australia). Additional scientists will give lectures on selected topics, and technical ICBM staff will assist in the practical work.

The main contributors are (listed in alphabetical order):

Dr. Thomas Badewien

... is a physical oceanographer in the Marine Sensors Group at ICBM. He joined ICBM as scientist in the DFG-Research Group on “BioGeoChemistry of Tidal Flats” in 2004. Since 2009, he is scientifically and technically responsible for running the time series station near Spiekeroog, and also a lecturer at the Jade University of Applied Sciences. He was co-organizer of the former ICBM summer schools

Dr. Melanie Beck

...is a research scientist at ICBM since 2004, initially as a PhD student in the Research Group on “BioGeoChemistry of Tidal Flats“ and now as a post doc. She was project coordinator of an interdisciplinary study in the Jade Bay. Her expertise is in long-term in situ nutrient measurements at the ICBM monitoring station, trace metal and nutrient dynamics in pore waters and the open water column, and natural and anthropogenically induced dynamics of heavy metals in sediments and pore waters.

Prof. Dr. Thorsten Dittmar

...came to Oldenburg as head of the Max Planck Research Group for Marine Geochemistry that has been established at ICBM in 2008. Before he held a position as Assistant Professor, Florida State University, Tallahassee, USA. His main research focus is marine organic geochemistry and the biogeochemistry of dissolved organic matter (DOM). His group operates an ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometer to molecularly characterize complex organic mixtures such as DOM, petroleum or humic substances.

Since September 2013 Thorsten Dittmar is Professor for Marine Geochemistry at Univ. of Oldenburg. With his group he forms a bridge between ICBM and the Max-Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen

Dr. Bert Engelen

...is a microbiologist and has been working at ICBM since 2001. He is an expert in molecular microbial ecology with special interest in the microbial and viral community composition in sediments. In his projects he studies, a.o. coastal (tidal flat) sediments, sapropels, and the deep biosphere in the oceans subsurface. He took part in various field campaigns and research cruises.

PD Dr. Holger Freund

...is a Quaternary geologist and geobotanist and leader of the Geoecology Group at ICBM since 2004. Before, he held several positions at the Geological Survey of Lower Saxony and the Universities of Hannover and Rostock. His work experience and research interests are in the fields of geoecology, as well as paleoclimatology and -ecology of the coastal Holocene with special emphasis on landscape development at different spatial and temporal scales.

Dr. Birte Junge

...is the managing director and scientific coordinator of ICBM. She studied biology and earth sciences and worked at the Geological Survey of Lower Saxony, Hannover. After finishing her PhD thesis on tropical soils, she was a Post Doc at the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture in Ibadan (Nigeria) and worked on soil degradation and soil conservation. Before she joined ICBM in July 2010, she worked as an international project manager at the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, Hannover.

Dr. Jürgen Köster

...is organic geochemist and geologist and joined ICBM in 1998. He worked in several large research projects, e.g. in the Research Group on “BioGeoChemistry of Tidal Flats”. His research interests are organic, molecular and isotope geochemistry, algal and bacterial lipids, sedimentology and diagenesis of organic matter, and geochemistry of fossil fuels. He was one of the organisers of the previous ICBM summer schools and is coordinator of the summer school in 2013.

Dr. Isaac Santos

...is a senior lecturer in coastal biogeochemistry and deputy director of the Centre for Coastal Biogeochemistry Research, Southern Cross University (Lismore, Australia). His fields of expertise include coastal biogeochemistry and hydrology, submarine groundwater discharge, and the cycling of carbon and nitrogen. Dr. Santos will be a fellow of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (Institute for Advanced Studies, Delmenhorst, Germany) in summer 2013.

Dr. Bernhard Schnetger

...is a senior scientist and head of the Central Inorganic Analytical Facilities at ICBM. He is specialized in analytical geochemistry of major, minor and trace elements in water and sediments using a variety of modern analytical methods. His research interests include marine and terrestrial geochemistry, trace elements in coastal environments, and the early diagenesis of marine sediments.

Dr. Gabriel Singer

...is a research associate at the WasserCluster Lunz (Austria) and an experienced academic lecturer at the University of Vienna (Dept. of Limnology, since 2005). Besides limnology, stream ecology, and carbon biogeochemistry he has expertise in biostatistics and stochastic environmental modelling. Dr. Singer will teach statistical methods that will be applied to analyse large geochemical data sets. He has applied for a fellowship at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (Institute for Advanced Studies, Delmenhorst, Germany) for summer 2013.
