About us
Hochschuldidaktik – Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
Our team at Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (Hochschuldidaktik) is committed to promoting excellence in teaching at the University of Oldenburg. We provide support to faculty members related to their teaching endeavors and offer variety of resources for class activities. The university’s teaching culture encourages learning-centered and research-based approaches, as premised on the paradigm shift from “teaching” to “learning”.
The team of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education is part of the Presidential Department for Study Affairs and reports to the Vice President for Instruction and Equal Opportunities.
The standard language of our workshops is German. However, our services and workshops are available in English upon request.
Developing and enhancing teaching: Workshops for faculty and instructors
As part of our Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Certificate program, we offer various workshops on academic teaching. Faculty members and other teaching staff can either complete the entire program or take individual courses and thus target particular areas they wish to improve. The certificate program is a cooperation between the University of Bremen, Osnabruck University and The Centre of Excellence in Lower Saxon Higher Education at the Braunschweig Institute of Technology. The program is accredited by the dghd (German Association for Educational and Academic Staff Development in Higher Education).
Faculty members are also welcome to attend other events that we organize as one-off events or on special occasions. In addition to sharing knowledge and honing teaching skills, our events strive to bring faculty together in order to encourage discussion and create space for exchange of ideas.

Award for Excellence in Teaching
In the past several years, the University of Oldenburg has been presenting awards for excellence in teaching to instructors for outstanding classes and extraordinary dedication to student learning. The award is funded by the Vice President for Instruction and Equal Opportunities and other sponsors.
Working Group for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (Hochschuldidaktik) is assisted by the Working Group for Teaching and Learning in Higher Educaiton (Arbeitsstelle Hochschuldidaktik). The working group comprises faculty members and representatives of all schools.
The working group reviews conceptualization, planning and content of our workshop program and acts as a catalyst for new initiatives. Additionally, the working group is actively engaged in the Award for Excellence in Teaching—from the call for nominations to the presentation of awards.
The University of Oldenburg has strong ties to other institutions of higher education. These networks have been formed through cooperation with partners in the certificate program and through membership in the dghd (German Association for Educational and Academic Staff Development in Higher Education)
Resources and support for faculty
The Stud.IP community “Hochschuldidaktik” offers teaching staff at the University of Oldenburg access to the latest information, hand-outs, and extensive collection of literature and online resources on academic teaching.
