Group discussion on Ingrid Köller's dissertation (1972)

In 1968, Ingrid Köller began studying for a doctorate in social sciences at the Technical University of Hanover. She never completed her doctorate. The group discussion describes joint reflections on the significance and development of textile teaching in Germany.

Chronicle of the Department of Textile Didactics

New edition of the writings of Ingrid Köller

Ingrid Köller (1935-2002) was a professor at the University of Oldenburg from 1985 to 2000. She founded and established the subject and the Institute of Textile Science. In the 1990s, she published her didactic model, the didactics of textile material culture, in several texts.

The model proposes a holistic and activity-orientated approach to teaching textiles using objects. She created extensive collections at the Institute for the holistic study of textile objects. The model and collections are still the basis for teaching at the Institute of Material Culture today and are referred to as the Oldenburg Model in specialised didactics.

In a two-year project, we have re-read Ingrid Köller's writings and retraced her work in today's Institute. With this site we would like to open up access to her writings and working materials and look forward to further research ideas in this field of the history of science in Germany.

Annotated new edition of Ingrid Köller's writings on the didactics of textile material culture

Whether you have picked up this booklet as a student, a trainee teacher, a teacher at school or a university lecturer, Ingrid Köller's Didactics of Textile Material Culture provides us all with the reassuring certainty that we can systematically access the things in our material environment. She shows us how textiles, which have been with us since childhood and are globally available, can be explored and appropriated according to a simple structure.

With its pragmatic concept, it has not only characterised teaching and learning practice at schools and universities in Lower Saxony since the 1990s, but has also left us an extensive historical legacy.

Because of this dual function - as the foundation of our didactic work today and as a historical source on the history of textile teaching in Germany - we cordially invite you to explore the didactics of textile material culture for yourself in this retrospective.
