School V - School of Medicine and Health Sciences has honoured graduates for the first time in its young history.
29 students on the model degree programme in human medicine at the European Medical School Oldenburg-Groningen (EMS) completed the first section of the medical examination. This corresponds to the former "Physikum" with course certificates in the so-called pre-clinical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, chemistry and physics. In addition, 14 students completed the international Master's degree programme in Neurocognitive Psychology this year, and 15 graduates completed their doctorates in medicine or the natural sciences.
"The founding of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the EMS in 2012 is one of the milestones in the history of the University of Oldenburg," explained University President Prof Dr Dr Hans Michael Piper. He is particularly pleased that the EMS study concept inspires students and leads to outstanding achievements and a wide range of competences.
Prof. Dr Sibrand Poppema, President of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, added: "The number of applicants, but above all the enthusiasm and academic success of the EMS students show that the model degree programme in human medicine has enriched the medical training landscape in Germany with the support of the state government of Lower Saxony and many other sponsors."
Two students and three graduates were honoured for their special achievements: Friederike Lohne and Johannes Grone (physics equivalent), Felix Pascal Feuerhake (Master of Science), Dr.-Ing. Eugen Rasumow and Dr. med. Lam. The latter was also awarded the doctoral prize of the Friends and Sponsors of the University Medicine Northwest e.V.
"Honouring the first students and graduates of our School is a very special event for us. It is important to remember that we not only successfully train medical students, but also offer our doctoral and Master's students in psychology very good training opportunities," explained Dean Prof Dr Gregor Theilmeier.
The School V - School of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Oldenburg was founded in summer 2012, making it the first new medical faculty to be established in Germany for more than 20 years. Its German-Dutch co-operation project EMS is unique in Europe with its transnational profile. Together with the Evangelical Hospital Oldenburg, the Oldenburg Clinical Centre, the Pius Hospital Oldenburg and the Karl Jaspers Clinic in Bad Zwischenahn, the School forms the University of Oldenburg Medical Campus. In addition to healthcare research, the research focus at School VI also includes neurosciences and hearing research with the "Hearing4all" cluster of excellence. The Oldenburg School has been a full member of the Medical Faculty Association of the Federal Republic of Germany (MFT) since summer 2015.
About the European Medical School:
The model degree programme in Human Medicine is characterised by a teaching concept that is both particularly practice- and research-oriented. From the very first day, everyday study life is characterised by a strong practical orientation. This means that the prospective doctors immediately come into contact with real-life requirements: Every week, a patient and their illness are presented; the entire study week is based on this case. Twice a year, students spend a week in general medical practices in the region. Problem-oriented learning, job-related communication training and strong research references in a research curriculum that becomes more intensive as the years of training progress characterise the course.
Interest in the new degree programme was again very high in its fourth year. Once again, more than 1,000 young people applied for the 40 study places in the winter semester.
Oldenburg students spend at least one year of their six-year course in Groningen. Groningen students are already making intensive use of the opportunity to study in Oldenburg for a year. In this way, students from both universities gain a profound insight into a different European healthcare system. The degree programme concludes with the State Examination.
