Dr Hannah Maier has been appointed Professor of Neuromodulation in Psychiatry at the Department of Human Medicine. At the same time, she is taking up the position of Lead Consultant at the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Karl-Jaspers-Klinik. Prior to this, Maier had been researching, teaching and practising at the Department of Psychiatry at Hannover Medical School (MHH) since 2016, most recently as Executive Senior Consultant. In 2023, she undertook a research fellowship at the Mohn Medical Imaging and Visualisation Centre in Bergen (Norway), where she conducted research as part of an international consortium.
Maier also completed her medical degree, her PhD and her habilitation at the MHH. She has also completed the Master’s programme in Health Business Administration at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Maier’s research focuses on the treatment of severe mental illnesses using neuromodulatory techniques. These include electroconvulsive therapy, in which a seizure is induced under anaesthesia, triggering a neurobiological healing process. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, in which a magnetic field specifically stimulates nerve cells in the brain, is also one of these techniques. Maier also focuses on personalised treatment of difficult-to-treat and chronic depressive disorders, as well as on ways to predict successful treatment outcomes.
