Wroclaw, the current "European Capital of Culture", is connected to Oldenburg and the surrounding region in many ways. What can these two cities achieve today? What prospects do they have for the future?

And what role do history, culture and science play in this? These and other questions will be addressed by both city leaders and the former President of the Bundestag and Wroclaw native Dr h.c. Wolfgang Thierse in a public panel discussion. Wolfgang Thierse in a public panel discussion on Wednesday, 28 September at 7.30 pm at the PFL Cultural Centre (Peterstraße 3). With the discussion "Oldenburg and Wrocław - two cities in Europe", the Federal Institute for Culture and History of Germans in Eastern Europe (BKGE), the University and the City of Oldenburg are continuing their event series "Oldenburg and Europe".

Numerous displaced persons and refugees came to Oldenburg from Wrocław and its Lower Silesian surroundings after the Second World War, and two Oldenburg mayors were born in Wrocław. Both cities were characterised by their new population structure after 1945, and their universities are linked by long-standing co-operation. In the panel discussion, Oldenburg and Wroclaw are exemplary for cities in Europe, for their opportunities and challenges.

The discussion with Thierse, the Mayor of Wrocław Dr Rafał Dutkiewicz and Oldenburg's Lord Mayor Jürgen Krogmann will be moderated by Prof Dr Gunilla Budde from the University's Institute of History. BKGE Director Prof Dr Matthias Weber and the former President of the State Parliament and Lord Mayor Horst Milde will speak a few introductory words beforehand. The BKGE, university and city are organising the event in co-operation with the Oldenburgische Landschaft, the German-Polish Society Oldenburg and Europe Direct Oldenburg. Admission is free.
