Study in Groningen

In the study programme Human Medicine, the aim is to promote European cooperation in medical education through cooperation with Groningen. Both faculties had coordinated their curricula in the founding phase and mutually recognise study modules as equivalent. 20 students from Oldenburg can study one semester at the partner university in Groningen each year with Erasmus+ funding.

Oldenburg students can spend a total of between six months and two years of their studies in Groningen. There are various options for this, so that students can take advantage of flexibility in planning their Groningen exchange. For example, they can study in the Groningen Bachelor curriculum in the third year, do their research there in the fourth or fifth year, or complete parts of their block internships or practical year in Groningen. For all these options, the respective number of places is limited.

Information events on the Groningen stay are held every year in November/December for the second year of study.

Groningen stay in year 3

As the study programme in Groningen starts one month earlier (on 1 September), a six-month stay in the 3rd year is only possible in the winter semester (Module 3.1).

A total of 20 exchange places are available for this. During the semester, students take part in the regular programme of medical studies at the Rijskuniversiteit Groningen (RUG). This is possible in both Dutch and English. The students from Oldenburg are integrated into the so-called "learning communities" (LCs). These "communities" are groups of students who all study the same content but with different specialisations/profiles.

The LCs are:

  1. Global health (English); examples of topics: Health equity & human rights, health systems, disaster relief, epidemics, tropical diseases, maternal and child health.
  2. Duurzame zorg (permanent health care, Dutch); examples of topics: Epidemiology, gender, polypharmacy, ageing population, palliative care, care chains, efficiency
  3. Intramural zorg (clinical healthcare, Dutch); examples of topics: Gender, clinical research, organisation of complex care, innovative therapeutics, care of the elderly, personalised medicine.
