Russian literature is based on (predominantly heretical) religious traditions and discussions to a greater extent than Western literature. In Soviet times in particular, the lack of a Russian philosophy was partially compensated for by literature.

Contributions to the literary theory of modernism also deal with questions of the conception of work and text in modernism, intertextuality, intermediality and the international orientation of modernist and postmodernist literature.
