Workshop "Trasyanka in Belarus"

From 29 to 31 March 2011, a workshop will take place as part of the research project Trasjanka in Belarus - a "mixed variety" as a product of Belarusian-Russian language contact. This research project, which is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, is led by Prof. Dr Gerd Hentschel, Institute of Slavic Studies and Prof. Dr Bernhard Kittel, Institute of Social Sciences at the CvO University in co-operation with colleagues from Belarusian State University Minsk from the fields of Belarusian Studies and Social Sciences. The project is currently in its final phase. The general topic of the project and the workshop is the influence of Russian on the language and the linguistic-social situation in Belarus, which was particularly strong during the Soviet Union, but also after Belarus became an independent state. The presentations at the workshop will be given by project participants from Belarus and Germany, including seven doctoral candidates. Experts in the field of contact linguistics from Germany, Belarus, Austria, Kazakhstan and Ukraine will also take part.
