Two BA students from the Institute of Social Sciences, Karolin Hellmuth and Max Paul, successfully completed the project "Homelessness as a Deprivation of Liberty" in 2024, for which they were awarded a budget of 10,000 euros as part of the 2024 university competition. The project was able to focus on the socially relevant topic of homelessness. As part of the Science Year 2024 with the theme "Freedom", Karolin Hellmuth and Max Paul asked themselves whether homelessness can be seen not only as a deprivation of freedom, but also as a deprivation of liberty. The aim was to raise awareness of this issue and draw attention to the help available in Oldenburg and the region. On 16 September 2024, lectures and an open breakfast on the topic were held at Forum St. Peter with 74 participants. On 24 September, the film "Hausnummer Null" was shown to 25 participants at Cine k, followed by a philosophical discussion. The events focussed in particular on bringing all participants into an equal exchange of ideas, so that both target groups (homeless people and the general public) could be equally involved.
