Working title: Parent-based promotion of early narrative and reading skills (ElternEuLe) - design, implementation and evaluation of a parent-based promotion programme to complement the EuLe-F project

The aim of the research project is the development and evaluation of parent-based support in the area of early literacy (family literacy). The family learning environment, cultural aspects and individual needs of the participating families are taken into account. The aim of family-based support is to make it easier for children to start learning to read at a later stage and to counteract possible developmental delays. As parents have a stronger influence on their child's language and literacy development than educational or healthcare professionals, the involvement of families is of crucial importance. Family literacy approaches can help to improve the conditions in the family that promote literacy and thus increase children's opportunities for education and participation.

The intervention takes place over a period of approx. 3 months. In preparation for this, a low-threshold, attractive and open concept is being developed so that people with a low level of education, low literacy skills and only rudimentary German language skills can also be reached. The concept should contain detailed information on the programme, the content and the material required with the respective support objectives. (Support) materials are created that can be used both for working with parents on site and for home support. Participating parents are given the opportunity to learn literacy-promoting behaviour using the model and are offered everyday opportunities to engage with written language in their own lives.

The sample should comprise at least 40 families. A longitudinal study in a pre-post design with a follow-up measurement will be carried out. In parallel to the parent-based support, the participating children will also receive support from educational professionals as part of the joint project "EuLe-F", with which synergy effects will result. By comparing the pre-posttest differences, the aim is to analyse whether the additional parent-based support achieves additive effects. In addition, this project will investigate how parent-based support affects the family's approach to literacy activities. Long-term effects after completion of the parental work will be examined six months later.
