Pedagogy and Didactics for Intellectual and Development Disabilities (IDD)

Welcome to the homepage of the team "Pedagogy and didactics for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities"

Our team - Prof. Dr. Andrea Erdélyi, Barbara Klaus-Karwisch, Dr. Sarah Laßmann, Anette Waschek, Franziska Brucke and Katharina Kuhlmann - is dedicated to research and teaching on the education and participation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in different phases of life and living contexts. Our research focus lies in particular in the areas of:

  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), including the development and evaluation of diagnostic instruments (Oldenburger Inventory for Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and issues relating to the sustainable implementation of AAC

  • Accessible communication in the medical context, through the evaluation of new apps for AAC in nursing or in the emergency department or the further development of communication folders in everyday clinical practice (e.g. neonatology, paediatric hospice)

  • (Subject specific) didactical issues in the flied of IDD

  • Digitalisation in the field of IDD, with a view to opportunities, challenges and concepts for school practice

  • Assistive technologies and digital participation in the field of IDD, with a special focus on the investigation of high-tech communication aids and the beliefs and competences of users, their social environment and the professionals involved

In teaching, it is important to us to closely link theory and practice. We want to motivate students to develop their own questions, apply scientific methods and critically reflect on practical experience.

We look forward to your questions and suggestions as well as to exchanging ideas with you!

Counselling Center for Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Augmentative and Alternative Communication has been a profile topic at the Institute of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation at the University of Oldenburg since 2004. With the opening of the outpatient clinic (now the Competence Center/KoggE) in 2008, the augmentative and alternative communication counselling center developed from the former room. Here, students, employees and other interested parties receive a compact overview of electronic and non-electronic aids as well as a practical introduction to the augmentative and alternative communication counselling center concepts. Currently, no individual counselling sessions can be offered until further notice. Group visits to introduce the augmentative and alternative communication counselling center are generally possible and can be requested. We are also the contact point for the Weser-Ems UK network and support research projects on the augmentative and alternative communication counselling center.

Further information can be found on the advice center website!
