Information for students studying to become primary school teachers who do not combine English with German or elementary maths
The framework agreement of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) relevant to the teaching profession at primary schools will be taken into account in the new edition of the Ordinance on Master's Degrees for Teaching Qualifications in Lower Saxony (Nds.MasterVO-Lehr) announced by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs for 2022.
According to this, students aiming to become primary school teachers must study at least one of the subjects German Studies (subject German) or Elementary Mathematics.
German Studies (subject German) or Elementary Mathematics can be combined with the following subjects:
- English Studies - subject English
- Interdisciplinary subject education - subject general education
- Sport science - subject sport
- Material Culture: Textiles - subject Textile Design
- Protestant theology and religious education - subject Protestant religion
- Art and Media - subject Art
- Music - subject Music
In addition, the subjects German Studies (subject German) and Elementary Mathematics can be combined.
All students who started their degree programme for primary school teaching before the 2018/2019 winter semester and are studying English Studies (subject English) but are not combining this with German Studies (subject German) or Elementary Mathematics have the following options:
1. change of subject
By changing their subject to German Studies or Elementary Mathematics in the two-subject Bachelor's programme, students can obtain a combination of subjects required for the primary school teaching degree.
Due to the limited study place capacity (restricted admission) in German Studies and Elementary Mathematics, it cannot be guaranteed that the application for a change of subject will be successful.
If you choose this option, we recommend that you take advantage of an application counselling session at the Admissions office.
2. change of the intended teaching profession
Students have the option to focus their Bachelor's degree programme on the teaching profession at Hauptschulen and Realschulen or Gymnasium - subject to a valid combination of subjects for these types of schools.
When choosing this option, it is recommended that you make use of a counselling session at the Central Student and Career Counselling Service.
3. retention of the primary school teaching qualification and the combination of subjects
In Lower Saxony, all English/English students affected by the change to the MasterVO-Lehr are likely to be protected for the transition to the preparatory service in Lower Saxony.
