Summer school programme in Israel
Prof. Dr Benedikt Hensel with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Since 2023, Professor Dr Benedikt Hensel of the University of Oldenburg has been co-directing, together with Dr Igor Kreimerman of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel – Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies – an annual summer school programme entitled ‘Biblical Archaeology and Regional Studies: Seminar with a teaching excavation in Hazor, Israel, and an excursion to archaeological sites’.
The summer school takes place in Israel, lasts for three weeks and is held annually during the summer term holidays. At the University of Oldenburg, participation in this summer school is open to all students.
The aims of the summer school:
a) A key component is the on-site teaching excavation in Hazor, Israel. The summer school aims to enable students to acquire and develop practical skills in the field of archaeology of the Southern Levant.
b) An introduction to the archaeology, history and regional studies of Israel. To this end, Professor Dr Benedikt Hensel and Dr Erik Eynikel organise excursions to historical monuments and excavation sites in Israel.
c) Seminars and lectures: Afternoons spent on site at Hazor will feature daily seminar sessions, individual lectures and workshops led by specialists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, partner departments in Israel, and lecturers from the Evangelical Institute for Evangelical Theology and Religious Education.
d) Creating spaces for intercultural and interfaith encounters: through a multinational and multicultural team at the on-site excavation and study centre, as well as through targeted lectures and discussions with high-ranking spiritual and cultural representatives in Israel (with particular attention paid to the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities).
