Summer school programme in Israel

Since 2023, Professor Dr Benedikt Hensel, University of Oldenburg, together with Dr Igor Kreimerman, Hebrew University Jerusalem/Israel - Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, has been leading an annual summer school programme called "Biblical Archaeology and Regional Studies: Seminar with Teaching Excavation in Hazor/Israel and Excursion to Archaeological Sites".
The summer school takes place in Israel, lasts 3 weeks and is held annually during the summer term holidays. Participation in this summer school is open to all students at the University of Oldenburg.
The aims of the Summer School:
(a) The essential component is the teaching excavation on site in Hazor/Israel . The Summer School aims at the acquisition and training of practical skills in the field of archaeology of the Southern Levant.
b) Introduction to the archaeology, history and regional studies of Israel. To this end, Professor Dr Benedikt Hensel and Dr Erik Eynikel will offer excursions to monuments and excavation sites in Israel.
c) Seminar and lectures: Afternoons on site in Hazor will be filled daily with seminar sessions, individual lectures and workshops by specialists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, partner departments from Israel, as well as lecturers from the Protestant Institute for Protestant Theology and Religious Education.
d) Creating spaces for intercultural and interreligious encounters: through a multinational and multicultural team at the excavation and study centre on site, as well as through targeted lectures and discussions with high-ranking spiritual and cultural representatives in Israel (the Christian, Jewish and Muslim spectrum in particular will be taken into account here).
