• Community dynamics of epiphytes

I am a botanist, interested in studying the diversity and dynamics of tropical vascular plants communities. Especially I focus in under-studied habitats such as the forest canopy, which are ecologically challenging for many plants whilst very important for conservation. My PhD is part of the project: Long-term dynamics of an epiphyte community– pattern and process. We are trying to understand how an epiphyte community, from a lowland forest in Panamá, changes over time on a long-term basis. Additionally to the “traditional” ecological data about community dynamics, we are also recording valuable information of the fallen epiphytes on the understory and their consequent-presumably fatal fate. Furthermore, we are doing propagation experiments to understand how the host-tree identity can be a filter for epiphyte species, and how the tree size and forest matrix influence the epiphyte performance.
