About me personally
After studying geology and palaeontology (1978-1984, University of Münster) and completing my doctorate in environmental geology and geochemistry (1988, University of Münster) and working as a project hydrogeologist at the Lower Saxony State Office for Soil Research in Bremen, I worked as a research assistant and coordinator (from 1990) at the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg. Since 2008 I have been head of the COAST coordination office.
The focus of my research work has shifted from hydrogeology, biogeophysics and biosedimentology to tidal flat research and coastal zone management. This field is currently being joined by issues of bioenergy, participation in water management and climate adaptation as well as marine spatial planning. More than 15 projects on these topics have been funded by the DFG, BMBF, BMU and, above all, the EU.
The further development of interdisciplinary teaching programmes in an increasingly international context is also important to me. I was able to gain experience as a guest lecturer at universities in Russia, Norway, Spain and Portugal as well as in planning study programmes with colleagues in Mexico and Tanzania.
