Book Fairies at the University of Oldenburg
About the project
Through the ‘Book Fairies’ project, the University of Oldenburg’s Climate Protection Management team aims to spark an interest in the topics of nature conservation, climate change and sustainability in an accessible way. Over the course of a year, books from various genres will be distributed on campus each month; these works explore nature and humanity’s relationship with it in a variety of styles – sometimes factual, sometimes in prose, and sometimes in verse.
The project is funded by the University Society of Oldenburg e.V.
Book Fairies at the University of Oldenburg
At the start of the winter semester, books suddenly start appearing on the Oldenburg University campus. Books that have been left behind in seemingly random places around the campus…
Anyone who finds one of these books is allowed to keep it, read it once, twice or three times, put it on their bookshelf or leave it somewhere else on the campus. And so, quietly and secretly, stories make the rounds – stories of creatures burrowing in the earth and birds singing in the trees, of the secrets of landscapes worth protecting, and of people who stand up for them.
Via this website and the University of Oldenburg’s Instagram channel, the Book Fairy posts little clues as to where she might have hidden a book.
Have you found a book?
Once you’ve found a book, you’re welcome to keep it. The Book Fairy will be particularly pleased if you send the book on its way again and leave it out somewhere on the campus. A good place to do this is, for example, the book box at the canteen in Haarentor, but perhaps you can think of other suitable spots too. Of course, the book is also welcome to be passed on amongst your fellow students or colleagues.
If you’d like, you can also track the book’s journey via BookCrossing. To do so, go to www.bookcrossing.com and enter the ID found at the front of the book. The Book Fairy has already registered the book under this number, and you can enter where you found it or where you’ve left it. The IDs of the books that have been left out are always listed here on the website, so you can see where the book is currently on its journey.

She is supported in this by the Climate Protection Management team at the University of Oldenburg, which is already implementing many projects designed to protect nature and the climate.
