From campus to the countryside - action to protect native species

Event in co-operation with the City of Oldenburg

The Haarenniederung is a popular local recreation area right next to our university campuses in Wechloy and Haarentor. Directly behind it is the Gerdshorst, a near-natural oak-beech forest. The landscape conservation area is also one of the most important urban amphibian habitats.

However, as in many other places, the balsam weed is spreading there and crowding out native species. That is why we at the university want to take action here. Together with the Environmental Office of the City of Oldenburg, we are organising a small event for all university members who want to take concrete action.

What: Afternoon of action to remove the balsam weed

When: Friday, 27 June 2025, 2pm - 4pm

Where: Gerdshorst nature reserve. Meeting point is the Drögen Hasen Weg at house number 220

Who: All members of the university

The City of Oldenburg will sponsor some snacks and cold drinks.

Registration deadline: 17 June 2025

FAQ

Where exactly is the meeting point?

The meeting point is marked on this map:

How many people can register?

The group should be about 5-15 people strong. A maximum of 20 people can register. However, if there is more interest, we will set up a waiting list, as experience has shown that places usually become available at short notice.

How long does the event last?

The activity should take about 2 hours. You can enjoy the snacks and cold drinks during this time.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring sturdy shoes, long trousers and work gloves.

Tools will be provided.

How can I imagine the organisation of the event?

At the beginning, the city will briefly introduce the landscape conservation area. We will then explore the area together and visit the action area. There, the balsam will be pulled out by hand and collected. The city of Oldenburg will take care of the removal.

Why does balsam need to be removed?

Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) originates from the western Himalayas, where it grows at altitudes of 1800 to 3000 metres above sea level on the banks of streams. In Germany, balsam has been listed as a priority invasive species of Union concern under Regulation (EC) 1143/2014 since 2 August 2017. Control is primarily carried out in floristically valuable areas. This includes the Gerdshorst landscape conservation area.

Is the event exclusively for university members?

The event is primarily for university members. However, you are welcome to send us an email if you are not working or studying at the university and we will see if we still have a place available. Please contact us at .

Can I bring someone else to the event?

In principle, you are welcome to bring your children, friends, flatmates, neighbours or similar. Please let us know when you register and send us an email to .

This year, the university also offered a varied accompanying programme on the topic of mobility.

The "postcode breakfast" offered the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with colleagues from the Oldenburg university environment. In a friendly atmosphere over a cup of coffee, people who live in the same postcode area and regularly travel to work from there were able to get to know each other and form possible car pools or pass on tips on good cycle routes.
