Science for sustainable development

In its coalition agreement, the state government of Lower Saxony agreed to anchor sustainability in research and teaching as a guiding principle for future university development. Challenges such as demographic change, the energy transition and a mobility, food and agricultural transition are to be supported by transdisciplinary research alliances.
The "Science for Sustainable Development" programme implements this with an offer to the scientific community: funding is provided to projects that contribute to social development based on the mission statement of sustainability. In the medium term, support is also planned for the establishment of research centres. The programme is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation's Niedersächsisches Vorab and implemented in co-operation between the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation.
