- 1980 - 1985 Studied History, Protestant Religious Education, Education and Sociology at the Universities of Münster and Oldenburg
- 1985 First State Examination for the teaching profession at grammar schools in Oldenburg
- 1988 - 1990 Traineeship at the State Teacher Training Centre in Celle
- 1989 Doctorate (Dr phil.) in the subject of history at the University of Oldenburg
- 1990 Second State Examination for the teaching profession at grammar schools in Celle
- 1990 - 1996 Research assistant at the School of History and Philosophy at Bielefeld University
