Research project

In search of one's own origins? Subjectivisation in the context of genetic genealogy (working title)

Abstract

Since the turn of the century, between twenty and thirty companies worldwide have been offering genetic ancestry tests for private individuals. Based on individual genetic markers or specific marker combinations, these tests aim to decode the biogeographical mixture of individual genomes, to prove the ancestry of certain "indigenous peoples" and ethnic groups and to locate previously unknown "DNA relatives".
The research project focuses on genetic genealogy as a peculiar kind of commercial 'origin diagnostics', in which a 'social imaginary' (Castoriadis) of origin and heritage unfolds, which in its backward-looking nature becomes constitutive of the present. The associated processes of (collective) subjectivation are examined from a genealogical-praxeological perspective. The aim is to identify disparate historical constellations in which genealogical and genetic models of thinking and imagining the subject have become intertwined and linked with specific processes of shaping it in practice. The translations (applications, transpositions, interpretations, suspensions, etc.) of these models and procedures in concrete socio-material arrangements will be investigated with the help of a multilocal praxeography, which, in addition to laboratories and archives, seeks out virtual spaces in particular to explore the locally and temporally distributed practice of genetic genealogy.
