The training programme is designed to offer doctoral candidates the opportunity to acquire the broadest possible range of skills, enabling them subsequently to pursue either an academic career or a career in fields closely related to academia. The qualification programme is designed to take account of the fact that not all doctoral candidates will go on to pursue an academic career. Therefore, in addition to developing academic expertise, the programme also aims to broaden students’ skills and provide guidance in fields related to academia (presentation, moderation, research management).

In these workshops, key non-academic skills are taught by external experts. The planned topics include: media and communication / organisation and management / financial management. These programmes are regularly evaluated in collaboration with the research school’s management team and labour market researchers, and adapted to current developments.

The project seminars are designed in accordance with the principles of project-based teaching and are intended to be coordinated on a case-by-case basis with selected project seminars from the Master’s programmes. Here, PhD students learn about various aspects of research management (conference organisation, securing external funding, communication, presentation techniques).

Practice forums take place annually during the winter semester. Professionals provide insights into the world of work and present career fields and entry opportunities for scholars in the humanities and cultural studies.
