abstract = {The complexity of innovating in rapidly changing settings leads startups to seek help from external actors from their innovation ecosystem to deal with such market contingency factors. Therefore, startups rely on innovation ecosystems to find support for developing technological and business model innovations. Nonetheless, the role played by innovation ecosystems in the relationship between market contingency factors and startups' innovativeness remains an underexplored matter. We provide novel findings to the field by analyzing the interplay between market contingency factors (pace of technological change, demand unpredictability, and market profitability) and innovation ecosystem participation on startups' technological and business model innovativeness. Supported by a weighted least square robust regression, we analyze a large sample of German startups (n = 766 responses), a leading country in startup innovation. Our findings show that participating in an innovation ecosystem helps startups deal with market contingencies by allowing them to fit such externalities. Our results show that participating in an innovation ecosystem is especially beneficial for technological innovativeness when startups must cope with rapidly changing, less predictable, and low-profit markets. Whereas for business model innovativeness, the innovation ecosystem is most beneficial for startups that must cope with low-profit and more predictable markets. We expand current literature on startup entrepreneurship and innovation by providing empirical evidence of the different impacts that innovation ecosystems can exert on startups depending on the contingent factors that affect the businesses and how external actors can help startups cope with uncertainty. The originality of this study lies in addressing main market contingency factors that highly impact nascent businesses and provide evidence of how innovation ecosystems’ actors can help them overcome such externalities.},

abstract = {Using the perspective of microfoundations, this article discusses the role that cooperation and technological orientation play on innovativeness. We place special emphasis on the effect of these factors on other internal factors that influence startups' innovativeness. The quantitative study was conducted based on the analysis of a large-sample data set gathered by a German startup innovation survey. Our results reveal the central role of cooperation and technological orientation, which can compensate for lower levels of other microfoundations or enhance the effect of some microfoundations when these are at higher levels. Results supported by a weighted least square regression also confirm and quantify the positive effect of entrepreneurial leadership, team size, team motivation, agility, cooperation, technological orientation, and sustainability orientation on startup innovativeness. Furthermore, our study offers an analysis of the pandemic's influence on the microfoundations of innovativeness. Our findings focused on internal factors that can be managed by startups and provide subsidies to help startups define business strategies that favor innovativeness.},

The existing typologies of sustainable entrepreneurship and green startups have been derived from theory and are conceptual or anecdotal in nature. The lack of validity and generalizability is a major research gap, as the existing typologies do not provide a sufficient basis for policy decisions on how to promote which type of entrepreneurship to effectively support specific transition policies. Against this backdrop, we investigate the research question: Does the transformation orientation differ among startups, and if so, how can they be clustered as basis for sustainability transition policy? Based on a sample of 1674 startups and cluster analysis, the paper makes three important contributions: First, we provide a differentiated perspective and empirical data on the transformation orientation of newcomers. Second, we provide an empirically founded taxonomy of the transformative orientation of startups and contribute to theory-building of transformative entrepreneurship. Third, we test the assumption inherent in most existing frameworks that there exists a high-potential subgroup of startups. Our results confirm the existence of a clearly distinguishable subgroup with a particularly high transformation orientation, which we label as “sustainability transformers.” In terms of transition strategies, policymakers can build on our findings to adjust public funds and support programs in favor of specific subgroups such as sustainability transformers.},

Therefore, it is hardly possible to generalize across sectors and to identify potential differences between sectors. We address this research gap with an investigation of a large sample of 130 diffusion cases from 11 different sectors. We apply a new mixed-method approach of statistical analysis and qualitative extreme case analysis. We provide insights on the differences in dissemination rates and knowledge on sector-specific factors. This helps to explain diffusion processes and design effective sector-specific transition policies. The concept of explanation range of factors clarifies the role and relevance of different diffusion factors and opens up avenues for further research on environmental innovation. Based on our findings, it can be concluded that some factors explain diffusion in (almost) all cases (high explanatory range), some only in specific sectors (medium explanatory range), and some merely in individual cases (low explanatory range).},

Insights on how this can be effectively implemented in start-up support systems are scarce and represent a research gap. Business plan competitions (BPCs) constitute an important element in entrepreneurial support systems, and are a powerful force in driving entrepreneurial activity. Up till now, it is unclear whether BPCs can actually influence the sustainability orientation of participating entrepreneurs and the sustainability performance of their ventures. The purpose of this work is to clarify whether the integration of sustainability goals and considerations into generic BPCs has an impact on the business activities of participating entrepreneurs and start-up teams. For our investigation we conducted a survey of the more than 1000 participants in the Business Plan Wettbewerb Berlin Brandenburg, which is the oldest and biggest generic business plan competition in Germany. For the analysis we use a structural equation model and apply the partial-least-squares method. Findings reveal that the promotion of sustainability in generic BPCs have an impact on the integration of sustainability in start-up business activity. Thus, from a sustainability point of view it makes sense to explicitly integrate sustainability into the concrete support offerings of generic BPCs. Our research contributes to cleaner production research by providing new insights on context factors in early (seed and start-up) phases of a new venture.},

abstract = {Recent studies suggest that a growing number of universities are embracing the notion that sustainability should and can be integrated into the university support system for entrepreneurship, or that sustainability activities should be implemented and promoted with entrepreneurial spirit. This finding relates positively to the demands by policy makers that sustainable entrepreneurship should be addressed in (higher) education, to prepare the mind-set of future “green entrepreneurs”. But there are hardly any insights concerning how an appropriate university system should be designed and which factors influence the emergence and implementation of university support systems for sustainable entrepreneurship. We address this research gap by means of a qualitative multi-case study approach. Based on 41 good practice examples, we carried out in-depth case studies investigating four universities based in the USA and Germany. Our results indicate that the four areas of potential influence derived from theory and the literature (environmental context, institutional framework, key persons and external interaction) are actually relevant. The case studies support the assumption that the role of key persons as initiators, promoters or networkers is of outstanding importance. In addition to the four areas of influence derived from theory and literature, the four case studies indicated that there are further relevant factors. It was possible to identify three additional fields of influence: (1) Core activities for developing university support systems (research or implementation projects, dialogue processes), (2) the organizational history and competencies background of universities and (3) student interest and demand. While the question why sustainable entrepreneurship should be supported by higher education institutions is clearly answered, there are hardly any insights concerning how an appropriate university system should be designed and which factors influence the emergence and implementation of university support systems for sustainable entrepreneurship.},

Thus, this paper investigates how sustainable incubators ensures their inflow of tenants, how they organize their activities and whether the incubator environment affect tenant recruitment. A case study approach analysing the sustainability oriented incubator Green Garage Berlin have been used to generate an understanding of selection and recruitment processes as well the influence of external environments. The results show that regional and inter-regional co-operation, together with a well-planned, structured pre-incubation process, are requirements for securing an inflow of tenants to sustainable incubators. Incubator reputation and sufficient long term funding is also a key to success. A good practice case as Green Garage cannot simply be replicated, but require openness to continue the learning process and adapting the knowledge to be transferred to local conditions.},

For a transition towards a green economy radical innovation plays a central role. Start-ups are key marketin the development and market introduction of radical sustainable innovation, but so far there is little research on the specific challenges and opportunities of “green” start-ups. In this conceptual paper, we bring together research and theory on entrepreneurship and innovation as well as sustainable business practice and ask why and how different types of “green” start-ups may encounter specific financing challenges and opportunities when developing their products/services. Die Habilitationsschrift baut auf dem noch jungen Forschungszweig der interaktiven Innovationsforschung auf, sichtet relevante Prozessmodelle und Akteurskonzepte und nimmt eine interaktionsökonomische Fundierung von Innovationsprozessen vor. Auf dieser Basis entwickelt der Autor die Grundzüge einer Theorie des Creative Response, die die Aktivierung kreativer unternehmerischer Problemlösungskapazitäten durch produktive Akteursinteraktionen und -kooperationen sowie deren Einbettung in geeignete strukturelle und mentale Kontexte erklärt. Ein zentraler Bestandteil des Theorieansatzes ist das Konzept des Interpreneurship. Dieses beschreibt die unternehmerische Rolle im Innovationsprozess als die Erzeugung neuer mentaler, organisationaler, institutioneller und intertemporaler Verbindungen und als die Gestaltung und Nutzung von Akteursinteraktionen als Basis für die Entdeckung und Durchsetzung neuer Problemlösungen. Interpreneurship lässt sich damit sowohl als vernetzendes Unternehmertum als auch als Unternehmertum in Netzwerken charakterisieren. Fichter skizziert sechs zentrale Interpreneurship-Funktionen entlang des Innovationsprozesses und präzisiert diese mit Blick auf die Generierung und Durchsetzung von Nachhaltigkeitsinnovationen. Die herausgearbeiteten Interpreneurship-Funktionen stellen endogene Kräfte der Entstehung und Durchsetzung von Nachhaltigkeitsinnovationen dar. Hiervon bleibt auch der Umweltschutz nicht unberührt. Längst ist der Schutz unserer Umwelt zur notwendigen, ja unerlässlichen Dimension geworden. Zu Recht postuliert dabei das aus dem Rio-Prozess 1992 entwickelte Leitbild der Nachhaltigkeit auch im weltweiten Kontext die gleichrangige Berücksichtigung ökonomischer, ökologischer und sozialer Belange. Deutschland ist wie kaum eine andere Nation auf offene Märkte angewiesen. Andererseits sind die deutschen Umweltstandards besonders anspruchsvoll. Des halb ist gerade die deutsche Politik gefordert, zur Erhaltung und Förderung unse rer Wettbewerbsfähigkeit für ein höheres Maß an internationalem Umweltschutz bei gleichzeitiger Gewährleistung des freien Handels einzutreten. Anspruchsvolle internationale Umweltstandards eröffnen innovativen deut schen Produzenten von Umweltschutz-Technologien auf einem rasant wachsenden Weltmarkt beachtliche neue Geschäftsfelder und Potentiale. Die Politik kann hier flankierend zur Seite stehen, sei es mit Hilfe des umfangreichen außenwirtschaft lichen Förderinstrumentariums, sei es als Türöffner. abstract = {A central element of this research by the Borderstep Institute is the systematic long-term measurement of the green start-up ecosystem in Germany. This year, the findings will be published as the "Green Startup Report 2025". The study marks a milestone: for the first time, a new, scientifically validated methodology is being used that enables a much more precise analysis of the dynamics of green start-ups. It is based on data on more than 12,000 young companies and over 50,000 commercial register entries on investments in start-ups. The Green Startup Report 2025 thus offers a previously unrivalled level of empirical depth and enables more well-founded statements to be made about the development of sustainable business models, their market opportunities and their actual contribution to climate protection. The analysis makes it clear that green start-ups are relevant players in the sustainable transformation. They develop market-based solutions for environmental and climate protection. Through their entrepreneurial activities, they make a measurable contribution to achieving national and European climate targets.},

abstract = {Im Juni 2022 veröffentlichte MHP die Studie „GreenTech Made in Germany – Sind die Weichen für Deutschland als GreenTechExportnation richtig gestellt?“ Aufbauend auf dieser ersten GreenTechStudie entstand die vorliegende Studie in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Borderstep Institut für Innovation und Nachhaltigkeit, das grüne Zukunftsmärkte mit hohem Umweltentlastungs- und Marktwachstumspotenzial identifiziert, mit Blick auf seine Skalierungs- und Diffusionsbedingungen untersucht und anhand von aussichtsreichen Geschäftsmodellen und Unternehmensbeispielen vorstellt. Dazu sollte der Fokus auf das zukunftsweisende Konzept der „Circular Economy“ gelegt werden. Der Begriff „Circular Economy“ lässt sich mit Kreislaufwirtschaft übersetzen. Er bezeichnet ein materiell geschlossenes Wirtschaftssystem, das auf die Minimierung und nachhaltige Nutzung natürlicher Ressourcen, die Maximierung der Wiederverwendung von Materialien und Rohstoffen und die Vermeidung von Abfällen ausgerichtet ist. Das zentrale Ziel ist dabei, den gesellschaftlichen Wohlstand vom Ressourcenverbrauch zu entkoppeln. Eine Circular Economy dient nicht nur dem Umwelt- und Klimaschutz, sondern soll auch einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Lösung des Knappheitsproblems durch sichere Rohstoffversorgung, z. B. bei kritischen Rohstoffen wie seltenen Erden, leisten. Es dient damit auch der Sicherung und Verbesserung der internationalen Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Wirtschaft. Vor diesem Hintergrund liefert die vorliegende Studie: 1) Daten und Fakten zu wichtigen grünen Wachstumsmärkten der Circular Economy. 2) Eine Beschreibung der Marktwachstumsbedingungen und der aktuellen und zukünftigen Verbreitungsdynamik von sieben ausgewählten zirkulären Wachstumsmärkten. 3) Neun zukunftsweisende Best Practice Beispiele für zirkuläre Geschäftsmodelle – von Start-ups bis zu Großunternehmen. Mit der faktenbasierten Vorstellung attraktiver grüner Zukunftsmärkte der Circular Economy und der detaillierten Vorstellung von Best Practice Beispielen zirkulärer Geschäftsmodelle zeigt die Studie Handlungsmöglichkeiten vor allem für die Zielgruppe Automobilwirtschaft, Maschinenbau und produzierendes Gewerbe auf. Sie regt damit zur Übernahme und Adaption erfolgreicher Wachstumsstrategien an, um die Entwicklung des Marktes in Deutschland für GreenTech zu fördern und die Transformation zu einer dekarbonisierten und kreislauffähigen Wirtschaft zu beschleunigen. abstract = {Mehr als die Hälfte der Umweltinnovationen in Deutschland lassen sich auf die Gründung grüner Unternehmen zurückführen. Grüne Gründungen sind deshalb ein wichtiger Erfolgsfaktor für die Umweltinnovationspolitik. Die Studie zeigt, wo derzeit die Stärken und Schwächen bei der Förderung grüner Gründungen in Deutschland liegen und macht konkrete Verbesserungsvorschläge. Wichtig sind zum Beispiel spezielle Förderprogramme für grüne Gründungen, die Verbesserung der Finanzierung und der Abbau von Hindernissen bei der Markteinführung umweltfreundlicher Techniken und Produkte. Außerdem sollte der Nachhaltigkeitsgedanke konsequent in die allgemeine Förderung von Gründungen integriert werden, so dass sich alle neu gegründeten Unternehmen stärker auf Umweltschutz und Nachhaltigkeit ausrichten.},
