Resilience Competence

The energy transition is making the energy system more efficient, but also more complex and vulnerable, with growing risks from extreme weather, geopolitical tensions and cyber-attacks. A great deal of research has already been carried out into the technical resilience of the system.

It remains unclear, however, what skills specialists and managers in business, public administration, politics and academia need to manage such crises and turn them into opportunities for innovation. This is where the project comes in.

The aim:

  • An empirical analysis of future skills requirements and identified skills gaps among specialists and managers.
  • To develop a ‘Resilient Energy Systems’ skills catalogue setting out the necessary skills for each target group.
  • Creation of a continuing professional development map providing an overview of current training programmes.
  • Dissemination of the results via a stakeholder workshop, two open-access articles, a policy brief for the state government and a final report.

The benefits:

  • Highlighting skills requirements: For the first time, a systematic assessment has been carried out to identify the skills needed to manage crises in critical energy infrastructure.
  • Tailoring further training: Further training institutions are provided with a sound basis for developing qualification programmes tailored to specific target groups.
  • Strengthening resilience: Well-qualified specialists and managers enhance the energy system’s resilience in business, administration, politics and academia.
  • Underpinning decisions: The analysis report and policy brief provide the state and practitioners with a robust basis for impact-oriented decisions on further training and funding.
