Art education and art mediation

Welcome to the website of the Department of Art Education and Art Mediation!

Our work centres on research and teaching in relation to the production, reflection and change of social differences in art-related educational spaces. We consider the practices of producing difference along art educational concepts and from, about and with art itself, such as education, complexity, institution and society.

On the one hand, we analyse the ways in which differences are created in art-related educational spaces such as schools and/or museums along their core concepts. On the other hand, the focus of our research and teaching is on the institutional framework conditions of art, mediation and education, such as their relational conditions and contributions to the creation and consolidation of social inequalities.

Against this background, our aim is to analyse orders of knowledge in the context of art, mediation and education along practices and discourses and to develop perspectives for professional action in art education and art mediating institutions.

In terms of research methodology, we work reconstructively - primarily with documentary, ethnographic, discourse-theoretical and historical approaches.

Our research focus is on

  • Reconstructions of inclusion and exclusion
  • Complexity in the field of art education
  • Creativity and ability norms
  • Theory of professionalisation
  • discourse analysis
