Scholarship programme

"The professor pays the tuition fees!"

New scholarship programme for particularly motivated first-year physics students

For many students, covering tuition fees is a hurdle. Even though physicists in particular have excellent career prospects after successfully completing their degree and, in the long term, are paid significantly more than, for example, mathematicians or engineers, the tuition fees involved are a reason to think carefully about which university to choose. However, this decision should be carefully weighed up, as not every university offers the same quality of conditions and areas of specialisation!

The University of Oldenburg offers particularly practice-oriented and future-focused study and research focuses, especially in the subject of physics. As a result, graduates of the university’s physics programme are particularly well-placed in the job market – companies across many sectors court students whilst they are still studying. But the university itself also offers a wide range of opportunities for further study following a Bachelor’s degree.

To help students overcome any remaining hurdles to successfully completing a physics degree in Oldenburg, the three Oldenburg physics professors – Christoph Lienau, Jürgen Parisi and Birger Kollmeier – have come up with an unconventional idea: “Each of us will use research funding to cover the tuition fees for one particularly gifted or motivated student for two years (four semesters),” says Kollmeier, explaining the new scheme. “We offer them the opportunity to work as student assistants in our department, so that they can gain a little insight into our current research work whilst also making a small contribution to research – that way, everyone benefits!”

Any newly enrolled student on the Bachelor's degree programme in Physics may apply for one of these funding scholarships by writing to the Director of the Institute of Physics, University of Oldenburg, 26111 Oldenburg.

Application details

Given the high level of interest, further physics lecturers have already indicated their willingness to provide support!
