Flag football, slackline and ultimate frisbee are just some of the sports that anyone interested can try out at the NEWsports day in Oldenburg on 12 January. Students from the "Sport and Lifestyle" Master's degree programme are organising the day. An interview with Mathias Freese from the organisation team.

QUESTION: Why should participants try out headis or parcours, for example?

Headis combines the movement of the header known from football with the tactical subtleties of table tennis to create a completely new sport: the ball must not be played with hands or feet, but only with the head.
Parcours is almost a symbol for the whole event, as it stands for overcoming boundaries. A sport where no equipment is necessary. The key is to see paths where there don't seem to be any and to overcome the barriers you set yourself.

QUESTION: Do you need to be in particularly good shape to take part on 12 January?

Absolutely not! The aim of the event is to offer a "taster" of sports. Anyone can take part or be a spectator. The activities on offer do not require a high level of technical skill or strength, and slackline, headis, fun high diving, footbag and juggling in particular are easy to do without a great deal of sporting experience. The only requirement is that you enjoy a bit of exercise!

QUESTION: You are studying "Sport and Lifestyle". What connection do you see between rare or new sports and your own lifestyle?

Different sports suit different lifestyles. With many established sports, we already know whether or not they suit us. That's why we offer a lot of less common sports to try out. So there's something new for everyone - and perhaps something suitable.

QUESTION: Last but not least: What is your personal favourite trend sport?

As a long-distance runner, my personal favourite is parcours, because it's simply about running at it and discovering new paths. I definitely want to try headis because I've often heard that it's a lot of fun.
