Everything revolves around study and career opportunities for mathematicians and physicists at the "Day of Mathematics" and the "Day of Physics", which will take place simultaneously on Wednesday, 21 November, from 9.15 a.m., on the Wechloy campus of the University of Oldenburg. Both events are aimed at pupils, teachers, first-year students and interested members of the public.
The "Day of Mathematics" begins at 9.45 a.m. with an official welcome by Institute Director Prof. Dr Hannes Uecker. At 12.00 noon, Prof. Dr Alfred Schmidt, lecturer at the Centre for Technomathematics at the University of Bremen, will give the keynote lecture "Mathematics in technical applications - from laser welding to metabolic analysis". Numerous lectures and information events will take place in the run-up to the event: Prof Dr Daniel Grieser, for example, will be on the trail of mathematical extremes in his lecture "Am kleinten, größten, schnellsten", Prof Dr Florian Heß will explore the question "Wie funktioniert Kryptografie?" and Karsten Fritzsch will discuss "Mathematik in der Jonglage - Nützt Abstraktion dem Jongleur?". The mathematics student body will be offering workshops on game strategy, and the mathematics and elementary mathematics degree programmes will be presented. From 1 p.m., the "Maths Mile" will take place for the first time in the entrance area with exhibits to participate in and think about. It will be supervised by students from the first three semesters. Pupils will receive first-hand information about studying at the university.
The "Day of Physics" begins at 9.15 a.m. with guided tours of the research laboratories. Among other things, ForWind, the centre for wind energy research at the universities of Oldenburg, Hanover and Bremen, will be presenting the wind tunnel. At 10.15 a.m., Institute Director Prof. Dr Christoph Lienau welcomes the visitors. Physics didactics expert Prof. Dr Michael Komorek will award the "Facharbeiten-Preis" to outstanding student theses. Afterwards, the Oldenburg physicist and physician Prof. Dr Dr Birger Kollmeier will give an insight into experimental physics in his lecture "Physics of Sensory Illusion". Prof. Dr Bernd Blasius will introduce the research field of theoretical physics in his lecture "Theoretical physics in biology: bioinvasion and the international ship network". After the presentation of the degree programmes, graduates answer questions about starting a career in the section "Degree ... and then?" questions about starting a career. In addition, physics working groups and young scientists will provide information about their research projects on the ring level.
