KinderUni: What happens when we see?

Most people take seeing for granted. But how does it actually work that the images come into our heads? The eyes and brain have to work hard to find out! Sensory physiologist Prof. Dr Jutta Kretzberg will provide the young researchers aged eight to twelve with a clear view in her lecture "Blind fish or eagle eye - what happens when we see?" on Wednesday, 18 September at 4.30 pm.

The mice Kuni and Kuno and leech Knut will also be taking part in the lecture in the Audimax of the lecture theatre centre - what they do is not yet revealed. In any case, the KinderUni students can look forward to exciting experiments that provide answers to many questions about vision - for example: How do we see colours and movement? Do animals see differently? and Who is the world champion at making things invisible?

After the lecture, the excitement continues with the traditional raffle that concludes the Children's University year and in which all children present take part. The first prize: a weekend trip to the capital city of Berlin with a visit to the Extavium hands-on science museum in Potsdam. The main prize, which includes a train journey for the winning child and accompanying person, two nights in a hotel and a Berlin WelcomeCard, is sponsored by Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg (LzO).

Tickets for the lecture are available for 2 euros from Nordwest Ticket GmbH on 0421/363636 and 01805/361136 (14 c/min.) and at the offices of the Nordwest-Zeitung. Admission to the lecture theatre centre on Uhlhornsweg is at 4.00 pm. Accompanying adults can follow the event as usual on a screen in the foyer of the building. The Malteser Hilfsdienst will provide security on site.

If you would like to familiarise yourself with the topic of the lecture now, you can do so in the children's library at the PFL and all Oldenburg district libraries. Special book tables have been set up here.

The media partners of the KinderUniversität Oldenburg are the Nordwest-Zeitung, NDR 1 Niedersachsen and Radio Bremen Vier. The project is supported by Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg (LzO) as well as Nordmetall, the business association "Der Kleine Kreis e.V." and "Junge Öffentliche".
