Dancing between two million books

The university invites the city and region to dance - at a very special venue: At the 6th Library Ball on 15 March, the University Library on the Haarentor campus will be transformed into a ballroom. The motto: "Swinging Library".

More than 700 guests will have the opportunity to shake a leg among almost two million books and media that evening. The traditional ball, which is being held to celebrate the university's 40th birthday, is being held under the motto "Swinging Library".

"We are the only university library that has already proven many times that it is ideal for celebrating with over 700 people," says Library Director Hans-Joachim Wätjen. Although the transformation into a ballroom was costly, it was highly appreciated by the guests, says Wätjen. The library's architecture and lighting concept create a special atmosphere. Quieter areas are available for those who are not so keen on dancing.

University President and patron Prof Dr Babette Simon will open the ball at around 8 p.m. and it is expected to last until the early hours of the morning. The "Konrad Kater Kapelle", which has already performed at the Vienna Opera Ball, will provide suitable dinner and dance music. Guests can also look forward to a hot and cold buffet prepared by three Oldenburg caterers. "As is traditional at the library balls, there is no strict dress code. Everyone is welcome - whether in jeans or a dinner jacket," emphasises Wätjen. Admission costs 48 euros and includes food.

Tickets are available from the University Library on 0441/798-4001 or by emailing bis-geschaeftsstelle@uol.de, as well as from the Isensee bookshop (Haarenstraße 20). There is no box office.

Temporary restriction of opening hours and services at the University Library from 12 to 16 March 2014

The University Library will be hosting two major events in the coming week. On 12 March, the annual conference of acousticians and audiologists will take place with around 1000 guests, and on 15 March, the library ball to celebrate the university's 40th birthday will be held in the library with around 600 guests.

The library will endeavour to offer you the usual service in the run-up to and aftermath of these events. Nevertheless, there will unfortunately be the following restrictions:

- on 12 March and 14 March the library will close at 12 noon and
- on 15 March and 16 March the whole day, some of the lockers will then be available in the Mensa foyer.
