In a letter to Lord Mayor Krogmann, the UGO board has spoken out in favour of renaming Uhlhornsweg to Karl-Jaspers-Allee. This would be a fitting tribute to one of Oldenburg's greatest sons and would also give the university a suitable address. In the 1960s, the city had only named a cul-de-sac with eight residential buildings after the philosopher and doctor.
Excerpt from the letter:
"In the interests of the university's image, the board of the Universitätsgesellschaft Oldenburg e.V. is contacting you with a proposal, the realisation of which we believe is easily possible and would not incur any major costs. We would like to ask the City of Oldenburg to rename Uhlhornsweg, which runs through the University's Haarentor campus, Karl-Jaspers-Allee.
The idea for the renaming was brought to our attention by several citizens who noticed that only a small cul-de-sac with eight detached houses in Bloherfelde bears the name of Karl Jaspers. This "honour", pronounced in 1974, does not do justice to the importance of perhaps the town's greatest son. Hence our suggestion that the tree-lined Uhlhornsweg, which was named in 1937 after the family who settled there in the 19th century, be given the name of the doctor and great philosopher from Oldenburg as an "avenue". This would provide the university with a particularly suitable address and the city would correct a decision made 40 years ago that does not seem happy from today's perspective."
