2019
Conferentie New Objectivity in Contrast

Op 21 en 22 maart 2019 vond op het Institute of Dutch Studies een internationale conferentie over de Neue Sachlichkeit plaats. The term was introduced in 1925 in Germany within the art of painting as a return to a realistic style of painting. From there, the term quickly entered other fields of art, including literature, and manifested itself throughout the German-speaking world. At the centre of the conference was also the contrasting perspective between the German art movement and its Dutch variant, the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. The international group of two Neerlandici (Nele Demedts, Ralf Grüttemeier, Lut Missinne, Koen Rymenants, Mathijs Sanders & Janka Wagner) and two Germanists (Moritz Baßler, Sabine Kyora, Helmut Lethen, Gunther Martens, Hubert Roland & Haimo Stiemer) provided for an interesting and fruitful discussion. De resultaten van het congres zullen in een Duits-Engelse verzamelbundel verschijnen.

The conference was organised by Ralf Grüttemeier and Janka Wagner (University of Oldenburg) in cooperation with Lut Missinne (University of Münster) with financial support from the German Research Foundation (DFG).

2016
On 22 September 2016, the didactic conference "Interfaces 2016" took place at the University of Oldenburg, organised by the Institute of Dutch Studies under the direction of Fabian Nattkämper.

With a total of almost 60 participants, around a third of whom contributed to the extensive programme in different ways, we experienced an informative and inspiring day. In addition to keynote speeches by Prof. Dr Sabine Doff and Prof. Dr Folkert Kuiken, who took us into the world of empirical research in the field of foreign language teaching, the participants were able to find out about the latest developments in ongoing projects in the areas of research and material development at the "Marketplace of Opportunities", and finally actively participate in discussion tandems. Of course, there was always the opportunity to talk to colleagues and network.

2014

"Literature in Law: Literary Trials in the World Republic of Letters" is the title of an international conference taking place at the University of Oldenburg on 21 and 22 March. The conference is part of the German Research Foundation (DFG)-funded project "Der Umgang der Jurisprudenz mit literarischen Texten", which is headed by Prof Dr Ralf Grüttemeier. Scholars from Australia, Germany, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the USA are expected to attend the conference, which is being organised by Grüttemeier, Ted Laros, Katharine Hupe and Janka Wanger. The format of the non-public conference does not include lectures, but rather an intensive discussion of texts sent out in advance by all participants.

"Mephisto" by Klaus Mann, "Madam Bovary" by Gustave Flaubert and "Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence" are just some of the works of world literature that have been dragged before the courts. The conference will focus on lawsuits against literary works from all over the world. The researchers will examine the question of which laws literature collided with in the legal systems of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
