Things to know about studying Dutch Studies
With 22 million speakers in the Netherlands and Flanders, Dutch is one of the medium-sized languages in Europe. A Bachelor's degree programme in Dutch Studies at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg covers linguistics and literature in particular.
After six semesters, your Bachelor's degree will provide you with a first professional qualification that will enable you to apply for jobs on the labour market. You can then go on to gain a Master of Arts or Master of Education. What is new about these internationally recognised degrees is the stronger structure as well as examinations during the course, which promote continuous learning and make it easier to get started, especially at the beginning of your studies. The Bachelor's degree is characterised by a clear practical orientation, which includes stays abroad, internships, academic English, communication/rhetoric and application training and thus prepares you specifically for professional life.
You should have a broad interest in languages, literature and culture to study Dutch Studies. In short, you should enjoy reading! Foreign languages and history are also useful for studying Dutch philology; knowledge of Dutch is not required (but will be recognised if available).
