The Next Generation of Researchers: A Look at the High School Internship Program at the Institute of Chemistry

What is cutting-edge research like? Two high school students, Felix Haas and Tom Heckmann, recently completed their school internships at the Institute of Chemistry. In two new reports, they share their experiences with ultra-high vacuum systems, the synthesis of hybrid materials, and college planning.

Supporting the next generation of scientists is a central part of our work at the Institute of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IFC). We recently had the pleasure of welcoming two dedicated high school students, Felix Haas and Tida Heckmann, to our laboratories, where they gained deep insight into the day-to-day work of chemical research.

Felix Haas used his internship primarily to explore potential academic paths. In an interview, he explains how the hands-on work in the lab helped him bridge the gap between high school knowledge and university research, reinforcing his desire to study chemistry after graduating from high school.

For Tida Heckmann, the time spent in the student lab of the Chemistry Didactics Working Group was a particular highlight. The focus was on the topic of nanochemistry in cancer medicine. Tida reports enthusiastically: “Everything was explained in a way that was very student-friendly, and I particularly enjoyed getting hands-on in this field.” Engaging with such modern research topics highlighted just how versatile the field of chemistry is and also reinforced Tida’s decision to pursue a degree in chemistry later on.

It’s wonderful to see the curiosity and enthusiasm with which both students tackled the challenges in the lab. We’re glad we could help guide them in their career choices and wish them both the best of luck in their future endeavors—perhaps soon as chemistry students in Oldenburg!
