"A great experience that I can only recommend!" This was the unanimous conclusion of six Oldenburg physics students who reported on their stays abroad at an information event organised by the Institute of Physics in May 2011.

• Thomas Bienert (l.) and Ephraim Sommer (r.) spent their 3rd semester on the Master's degree programme at San Jose State University, California, USA.
• Susanne Heinicke (3rd from right) was on the Diplom Physics degree programme when she spent a year at the university in Cape Town, South Africa.
• Andreas Schönfeld (2nd from left) was able to spend 10 weeks at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, on a research project during his Bachelor's degree programme.
• Martin Esmann (3rd from left) had the opportunity to spend the first research phase of his Master's thesis at the renowned Harvard University, Cambridge / Boston, USA.

Five of the six received funding from very different sources for their stay abroad. Some received Auslandsbafög, others scholarships via the ERASMUS programme or from the Studienstiftung and others received funding from the DAAD. This made the stay abroad affordable for everyone. In addition to studying and researching physics, they all used their stay abroad to improve their language skills, get to know the country and its people and experience other cultures. This was also a great enrichment for everyone and they all agreed: "We would do it again any time!"
