Professional Development

The pathway "Professional Development" is an integral part of the curriculum in study years 1-5 and serves to prepare students for a career as a doctor. Within the framework of this training pathway, students are to be taught an awareness of their own actions, their own decision-making and their own role behaviour. Practical and clinical experiences are processed and reflected upon, in addition to which a number of supra-disciplinary topics with overlap to language, humanities, social or cultural sciences are discussed.

Professional Development Year 1-4

In years 1 to 4, students meet regularly in small groups with a medical tutor. The constant small groups create a framework in which students can address and discuss confidential content.

The content and objectives of the professional development events are based on the topics that the students are dealing with in the respective year of study: In the first three years of study, the focus is on "Professional Behaviour". The students learn the basics of professional behaviour in the medical profession and are able to discuss this on the basis of case studies. They also learn to analyse personal experiences through critical questioning and answering. In the fourth year of study, these skills are expanded to include "assessing (inter-)professional behaviour". In the meetings, students reflect on their personal strengths and weaknesses. They develop strategies to develop towards their self-set goals. This includes addressing their own problems as well as those of colleagues, analysing them and developing solution strategies.

Professional Development Year 5

In the fifth year of study, the focus is on reflection and consolidation of one's own professional (medical) actions as well as individual further qualification. The students are then able to describe and question experiences. Based on this analysis, they can formulate further personal goals that serve professional development. The Professional Development Year 5 module is composed of two parts: a mentoring programme and a workshop series with a wide range of offers for the students: The mentoring programme includes at least four meetings between mentee (student) and mentor (doctor). For each of these meetings, the student is to prepare tasks that are to be seen as a basic framework for the content of the meetings. The PE Year 5 workshop series comprises an elective curriculum that deepens and complements the curricular teaching in years one to four and also reflects the curricular focus in the fifth year of study. The curriculum is based on four pillars: Role of the Doctor, Communication, Practical Skills & Clinical Competences and Research & Science.
