Summer School 2024

19.09.24 - 20.09.2024
University of Oldenburg, Germany

The Summer School on Machine Learning & Numerics for Acoustics will take place from 19.09.2024 – 20.09.2024 at the University of Oldenburg, Germany. It provides a great opportunity for Master and PhD students to broaden their understanding in machine learning and numerical methods relevant in cutting-edge hearing research.

The Summer School give also insights into the current research addressed in the collaborative research centre (CRC) Hearing acoustics (coordinator: Prof. Dr. Volker Hohmann) at the University of Oldenburg - School of Medicine and Health sciences – Dept. of Medical Physics and Acoustics dedicated to advance our understanding of auditory perception in complex acoustic environments and to improve acoustic communication in such difficult environments.

The PIs of the CRC areas Algorithms and Applications will give lecture talks on following topics:

  • Deep Learning Architectures for Speech Processing (Bernd Meyer)
  • Deep and Non-Deep Machine Learning Methods, Their Properties and Their Comparison (Jörg Lücke)
  • Deep Noise Suppression (Jörn Anemüller)
  • Model-based and Learning-based Approaches for Speech Enhancement (Simon Doclo)
  • Ear Canal Acoustics Beyond Cylindrical Tubes – Mathematical Models, Numerical Simulation and Applications (Alexej Chernov and Matthias Blau)
  • Anthropomorphic and Learning-based Approaches for Speaker Localization (Steven van de Par)

Accompanying  the lecture talks, Bernd Meyer will offer a hands-on exercise on „Convolutional and recurrent networks for speech processing”.

The Summer School is also a great opportunity to meet with other students and to discuss your own research and ideas with leading experts. Therefore, we invite all participants to present their research work during the poster sessions and to discuss in a relaxed atmosphere.

About the CRC "Hearing Acoustics"

The common goal of the different research projects in the CRC is to quantitatively characterize the benefit of hearing devices in real-life environments considering complex auditory scenes and audio-visual as well as user-device interactions. Another key element is the transfer of the obtained insights into applications and future hearing devices. The CRC and the Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics provide an attractive research environment within international teams and most advanced research facilities.

Fees, Stipends & Credit Points

The Summer School is free from registration fees.

The CRC offers 8 travel grants for international Master and PhD students and national Master students.

International master and doctoral students and national master students in the fields of acoustics, physics, bio-medical or electrical engineering, hearing research, technical audiology or related disciplines can apply for a travel grant until 03.08.2024. Please send your CV and a letter of motivation to  and .

Participating PhD students will receive 1 ECTS credit point and a certificate of attendance will be provided as well.
