The "Sport and Exercise" department of the Institute of Sport Science, headed by Prof Dr Jörg Schorer, is interested in understanding and researching sport motor and sport psychological phenomena in sport and other fields of exercise.

The "Sport and Education" department consists of the areas of "Sport Education and Sport Didactics" and "Theory and Practice of Sports". It is headed by Prof Dr Jan Erhorn. The focus is on current scientific discourse on exercise and sport in the context of education and training.

The "Sport and Training" department of the Institute of Sport Science, headed by Prof Dr Dirk Büsch, conducts research in the fields of training science and the health effects of exercise.
