Book Reading: Are you disabled or what?

10.04.2024 at 16:00

How can we succeed in creating an inclusive society? In this book, the authors explore the question of how an inclusive environment and mindset can be grown from an early age. They provide important impulses on the topics of inclusion and ableism and show new ways for a fairer education and society. In keeping with the motto of the disability movement "Nothing about us, without us", they have compiled this book with additional expert voices and many testimonials to support parents, teachers and carers on their journey. Together, they offer very concrete and practical approaches for inclusive and ableism-sensitive support in daycare centres, schools and everyday life.

Exchange Your Experiences: Studying "Differently Normal"

11.04.2024 at 10:00 a.m.

Many students at the University of Oldenburg are faced with the challenge of having to cope with everyday life at university despite their impairments. An exchange with people who are similarly affected can help to accept and explore your own limits and strength.
Diversity is as diverse and widespread as the associated hurdles, difficulties and challenges that can arise in everyday university life.
Sometimes all you need is the knowledge about the right place to find help, a contact point for orientation and support in what is happening at the university, or the advice of people who make you feel understood.
As varied as the different impairments are, the hurdles that have to be overcome are often similar - whether it's talking to lecturers, participating in classroom teaching and group work or taking exams. Tell us what challenges you are facing, what support you would like to have, which measures could be helpful and which are simply missing. Share your experiences and pass on your tricks to others.
You are not alone with your difficulties - together many things can be solved more easily.

What does AD/H(S) acceptance have to do with social criticism?
With Sascha Thierry Esequiyl Rubel

15.05.2024 um 18.00 im Raum Raum V03 0-C003

In addition to the history of the concept and name "AD/HD", we will also look at the characteristics of (ADH) people. We look at how the general lack of understanding of our society(s) towards ADHD people contributes to their discrimination and disability. We also ask ourselves together how all of this can be linked to the structure of supremacy, why not everyone is diagnosed and why marginalised people often receive a diagnosis only late in life. Finally, in a small digression, we learn something about autistic (ADH) people. The lecture can be a first step towards (ADH) acceptance. I look forward to meeting you.

In an exchange round we can share our experiences, network as affected people and ask respectful questions as non-affected people in order to learn to live in a more discrimination-critical way.

No / little prior knowledge is necessary. The lecture is for all people who want to learn more, for (ADH) people and for their relatives.

The lecture will be held in German (unfortunately no „Leichte Sprache” (simple German)).

The lecture will be given by a non-indigenous, white, multi-disabled and queer non-binary person.

Trigger warnings (Sensitivity is a priority throughout the event). At the beginning, problems in Germany, systemic discrimination and various forms of discrimination are discussed. This is done in order to be able to discuss approaches to overcoming them. In the flow of speech and on the slides, reference is made to trigger warnings are taken into account. Extremely triggering things are not read out loud by me (unless a person needs this to perceive the content, in which case this is done at the seat or separately).

Personal introduction:

Sascha Thierry Esequiyl Rubel (no pronouns, they/them, ilu/dilus) is a white, non-indigenous non-binary trans*, as well as a queer, multi-disabled and chronically ill autistic person. They are and have been active in various activist formats, for example in panel discussions or in peer counselling with the federal association Lambda. They give lectures on nonbinarity and autism and ran the Queer Department at Kiel University for about a year and a half, where they were allowed to organise and moderate many events with well-known intersectional queer people on her own initiative (for example with the dear: Mohamed Amjahid, Dr Emilia Roig, Nora Eckert, Dr Michaela Dudley, Anna Langsch and SchwarzRund). Sascha Thierry is now studying for a Master's degree in Philosophy at the University of Cologne after completing a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and German Studies of Arts in Kiel. Ilu believes in the revolutionary potential of sensitivity and sensibility. They like to dance in Ilu's free time, research topics they are passionate about and make almost all their own jewellery.
