Exams

The examination system is one of many autonomous areas of the study programme coordination of the model study programme in human medicine at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. The Examination Coordination works hand in hand with the University's Academic Examination Office and the State Examination Office of Lower Saxony to cover the entire spectrum of examination-related tasks and concerns.

The Examination Curriculum in the Model Course of Studies in Human Medicine

The design of the examination curriculum in the model course of study in human medicine at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg is based both on the six-level learning goal taxonomy according to Anderson & Krathwohl (Anderson, L. W./Krathwohl, D. (2001): A Taxonomy for Learning, Teaching, and Assessing. A Revision of Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives.) as well as on the harmony between teaching-learning objectives, teaching-learning situation and examinations - the so-called Constructive Alignment (Wildt, J./Wildt, B. (2011): Lernprozessorientiertes Prüfen im "Constructive Alignment", in: Berendt, B./Voss, H.-P./Wildt, J. (eds.): Neues Handbuch Hochschullehre, Teil H: Prüfungen und Leistungskontrollen. Further development of the examination system as a consequence of the Bologna Process). Taking both models into account allows for a broad spectrum in terms of examination formats and the competences to be examined (see Figure 1). The aim is to use an examination format in each case that adequately tests the specified learning objectives.

Figure 1: Listed are the examination formats used in the Oldenburg model study programme and the learning level that can be achieved with them.

Examinations, e-examinations

Examinations are the most frequent examination format in the model course of study in human medicine in Oldenburg with the aim, among others, of preparing students for the second section of the medical examination (2nd state examination ("M2"), written examination with multiple choice (MC) questions).

Each of the 17 modules concludes with a module exam with up to 100 questions/assignments, which tests the content of the entire module. It is taught and examined across subjects. The canon of subjects within a module is therefore reflected in the blueprint of the associated examination, which means that up to 21 subjects and cross-sectional areas (as of WS 2022/23) are represented within a module examination, for which students must demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of a great deal of information. With each module exam, subject-related points are collected, on the basis of which the required performance certificates are issued.

Since the start of the model study programme in human medicine in 2012, examinations have been conducted as e-examinations. For this purpose, the university works together with IQuL GmbH. This makes it possible not only to design a modern examination curriculum, but also to implement a modern and innovative examination procedure. A demo exam with the currently used exam question formats (multiple choice (MC) question with single choice, picture diagnosis and free text) can be taken under the link https://cvou-demo.q-examiner.com.

OSCEs

The acronym OSCE stands for objective structured clinical examination and characterises a test first developed in 1979 by Harden & Gleeson (Harden, R M./Gleeson, F. A. (1979): Assessment of clinical competence using an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). Medical Education. 13(1): 41-54.), which always assesses students in the same way, i.e. objectively, using standardised tasks/cases and evaluation sheets. An OSCE consists of a course of individual stations that each student passes through in rotation. Since it is a practice-oriented examination format, the focus is on competences of everyday medical practice such as clinical examinations, anamnesis/consultation discussions, interpretation and communication of findings, clinical reasoning, hygienic work, confident appearance and psychosocial competences. Consequently, simulation persons are often used in an OSCE in order to simulate everyday medical situations as realistically as possible.

OSCEs are the second most common examination format in the model course of study in human medicine, partly to prepare students for the third section of the medical examination (3rd state examination ("M3"), oral-practical examination). Oldenburg students complete a total of 8 OSCEs in 5 years of study, of which 3 are year-related and 5 semester-related OSCEs.

Physikumsäquivalent

In contrast to the First Section of the Medical Examination (1st State Examination ("M1"), combination of written examination with multiple choice (MC) questions and oral examination), the so-called Physics Examination Equivalent does not take place after completion of the fourth semester and in close succession, but is distributed over the first study section (study years 1 - 3) at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg.

In order to pass the written part of the equivalence certificate for the first section of the medical examination, at least 60% of the examination questions of the 8 subjects according to § 22 ÄAppO from the module examinations of the first study section must be answered correctly. In order to pass the oral part of the equivalence certificate for the first section of the medical examination, the OSCEs of the first study section must be passed.

Training in first aid according to § 5 ÄAppO

Training in first aid according to § 5 ÄAppO is, in addition to the nursing service according to § 6 ÄAppO, a certificate of achievement that can already be obtained before studying medicine. The regulations differ from federal state to federal state and also within a federal state, if necessary, from faculty to faculty. Therefore, please note that the following information refers exclusively to students of human medicine at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg.

At the latest for admission to the second section of the medical examination, proof of training in first aid must be submitted to the Landesprüfungsamt Niedersachsen (State Examination Office of Lower Saxony) in accordance with § 5 ÄAppO. For the issue of the physics examination equivalent after completion of the 3rd year of study, proof must be submitted to the Academic Examination Office. In particular, the following shall be considered as proof:

  • A certificate from the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Deutschland e. V., the German Red Cross, the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe or the Malteser-Hilfsdienst e.V..
  • The certificate of completed training in a federally regulated profession in the health sector, provided that training in first aid is prescribed in the training and examination regulations and was the subject of the training. The submission of the training and examination regulations is therefore generally necessary.
  • A certificate of training as a nurse's assistant or nursing assistant or of paramedic training.
  • A certificate from a public administration agency, in particular the Federal Armed Forces, the police or the Federal Police, confirming training in first aid.
  • A certificate from another body on first aid training, if the suitability of this body for such training has been recognised by the competent body according to Land law. The recognition of the agency should be noted separately on the certificate.

Attention: Proof of participation in a course "Life-saving immediate measures at the scene of an accident" cannot be recognised as proof of training in first aid!

The content requirements are:

  • In September 2014, the Federal Working Group on First Aid (BAGEH) and the professional associations agreed on a reform of first aid training: since 01 April 2015, first aid training has been shortened from 16 to 9 teaching units.
  • For the issuing of the physics examination equivalent at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, the following evidence can therefore be submitted as proof of first aid training in accordance with § 5 ÄAppO:
    • Certificates (see above) of a first aid course in accordance with previous training regulations of demonstrably at least 16 teaching units or
    • Certificate (see above) of a first aid course according to the new training regulations, which was completed after 1 April 2015, with at least 9 teaching units.

Please enquire with the issuing institution about periods of limitation or validity. The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg itself has agreed with the Landesprüfungsamt Niedersachsen (State Examination Office of Lower Saxony) that training in first aid in accordance with § 5 ÄAppO is not subject to a limitation period.

The certificate is to be submitted to the Academic Examinations Office, stating the personal data, and the achievement will be entered there on Stud.IP as having been achieved.

Nursing service according to § 6 ÄAppO

The nursing service according to § 6 ÄAppO is, in addition to the training in first aid according to § 5 ÄAppO, a certificate of achievement that can already be provided before the study of medicine. If possible, it is strongly recommended that it be completed before commencing studies. The regulations differ from federal state to federal state and also from faculty to faculty within a federal state. Therefore, please note that the following information refers exclusively to students of human medicine at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg.

At the latest for admission to the second section of the medical examination, proof of nursing service must be submitted to the Landesprüfungsamt Niedersachsen (State Examination Office of Lower Saxony) in accordance with § 6 ÄAppO. For the issuance of the physics equivalent after completion of the 3rd year of study, proof must be submitted to the Academic Examination Office.

  • Duration: 3 months
  • Distribution: max. 3 sections of at least one month each, thus there are the following 4 options:
    • 3x 1 month
    • 1x 2 months & 1x 1 month
    • 1x 3 months
    • 1 month and x days, 1 month and y days (x + y must add up to at least 30 days)
  • Completion: before the start of the studies or during the tuition-free period of the studies, but at the earliest after obtaining the Allgemeine Hochschulreife (Abitur).
  • Institutions: Hospital or rehabilitation institution with comparable care requirements (an additional note on the comparable care requirements of the issuing institution is necessary here). Attention: Homes for the elderly/seniors, social wards etc. and hospital outpatient departments do not belong to this category!
  • The following can be credited (the Landesprüfungsamt Niedersachsen is responsible for crediting in any case):
    • Nursing work in the medical service of the Federal Armed Forces or in comparable institutions.
    • a nursing activity within the framework of a voluntary social year according to the provisions of the Act on the Promotion of a Voluntary Social Year or according to the provisions of the Youth Voluntary Service Act.
    • a nursing activity within the framework of the Federal Volunteer Service in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Volunteer Service Act.
    • a nursing activity within the framework of a civilian service according to the regulations of the Civilian Service Act.
    • a successfully completed training as a midwife, paramedic, emergency paramedic, in nursing, paediatric nursing or geriatric nursing as well as a successfully completed training of at least one year in nursing assistance or geriatric nursing assistance regulated by Land law.
    • a period ofnursing service abroad. For the recognition of nursing service performed abroad, the nursing service certificate must be submitted in German-English version. In addition, a short employer's reference is required. This usually contains: contact details and a short self-description of the respective hospital, job description, stamp and signature. If the document is not issued in German or English, a certified translation must also be enclosed.

The nursing service certificate(s) must first be stamped by the Lower Saxony State Examination Office (submission/presentation of the originals by post to the Lower Saxony State Examination Office or in person during the office hours of the Lower Saxony State Examination Office by the students) before the service is registered as rendered by the Academic Examination Office of the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg at Stud.IP. The certificate(nursing service template) must be provided with the original signature of the nursing service management as well as the stamp of the hospital. The name, address and contact details of the head of nursing should be recognisable. The certificate(s) stamped by the Landesprüfungsamt Niedersachsen (State Examination Office of Lower Saxony) or the credit notification must be submitted by the students themselves to the Akademisches Prüfungsamt (Academic Examination Office) of the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, stating their personal data.
