On 21 January, the Chemistry-in-Action competition took place at the Institute
Once again this year, the ‘Chemistry in Action’ competition, organised by the Institute of Chemistry in co-operation with the Northwest Research Centre, took place. The competition was held over two days. This year, 12 teams – comprising 48 pupils from Years 9 and 10 – took part in the competition.
On the first day, the pupils carried out a literature review in the university library. Following a briefing on how to conduct a literature review, the pupils were given a brief introduction to designing scientific posters and were then set the task of designing their own poster.
On the second day, the teams were given a task to be solved practically in the Institute’s laboratories: within the allotted time, they had to arrive at a solution through independent experimentation.
After a break to rest, the event continued in the small lecture theatre: the pupils’ subject knowledge was tested via a written test. Each pupil was expected to work out the answers to the questions *on their own.
Team spirit was once again called for in the final part of the competition: the individual teams presented their posters with a short talk.
Finally, prizes were awarded to the top performers:
- Ineke Müller from Teletta-Gross Gymnasium in Leer received the prize for the best pupil in Year 9.
- Piet Uphoff from Herbert Gymnasium in Oldenburg was awarded the prize for the best pupil in Year 10.
The team prizes were awarded as follows:
- First place went to the pupils from Liebfrauenschule Cloppenburg: Finn Kraßmann, Johanna Meyer, Aurelia Rommel and Jan Schürmann.
- Second place went to the pupils from the Altes Gymnasium in Oldenburg: Felix Blum, Katja Hammels, David Mahlon and Tue Minh Vu.
- Third place went to the pupils from the Neues Gymnasium Oldenburg: Max Bachmann, Arwen Sandmann-Stührmann, Jonas Stenzel and Lara Stuntebeck.
- The best poster was designed by pupils from the Liebfrauenschule Oldenburg: Philp Ottmann, Charlotte Schlosser, Tobias Schrandt and Johanna Wieferink.
