It is often not easy to reconcile top-class sport and studying. In order to support students in pursuing a top-class sporting career alongside their academic education, the General German University Sports Association (adh) has initiated the "Partner universities of top-class sport" project. In addition to the University of Oldenburg, over 100 other universities in Germany are involved. In co-operation with the Olympic training centres, the partner universities ensure that qualified students receive special support within the scope of their possibilities. The prerequisite for competitive athletes studying at the University of Oldenburg is a nomination for the A, B or C squad of the Lower Saxony Olympic Training Centre.

As part of the project, the university undertakes to provide support in the following contexts within the scope of its legal possibilities:

• Introduction of semesters off for important championships and for sporting reasons
• Flexibilisation of attendance times, in particular the possibility of making up for absences
• individually coordinated submission and examination dates, with modification of examination periods and duration of study if necessary
• Individualised planning of internships and excursions
• part-time study where possible
• the subject-specific review of special funding opportunities in individual cases
• encouraging their subdivisions to utilise their respective subject-specific opportunities to support top student athletes
• using the university's own sports facilities as favourably as possible in terms of time and money
