Science in the pub

“Where the Ocean meets the Sky...” is where ICBM scientist Oliver Wurl will take you in this year's edition of ‘Hirn vom Hahn - Wissen frisch gezapft’.

One evening, eight pubs, 16 lectures

Insights into current research projects in a relaxed atmosphere - that's what the “Hirn vom Hahn - Wissen frisch gezapft!” series offers: On Thursday, September 19, scientists from Oldenburg's research landscape will once again leave their offices and laboratories and set off to report on their projects in an entertaining and amusing way in a total of eight Oldenburg pubs and bars. The events start at 7.30 pm. The first presentation will be followed by the second at 8.45 pm at each venue.

Interested guests can choose from a wide range of 16 topics: They can find out, for example, what role the “skin” of the oceans plays in the global climate, which optical measurement techniques help forensic scientists to find clues and why lasers are becoming increasingly important in wind forecasting. The range of subject areas extends from medicine, marine biology and computer science to German studies, history and art.

In 20-minute presentations, the researchers will introduce the interested public to current scientific contexts in their respective fields, tell curiosities from their day-to-day work and report on fascinating research results. Visitors are welcome to ask questions and discuss with the scientists at the pub after the presentations.

The participating pubs and bars are Artischocke Weinbar, Buddel Jungs Bar, Garda Gourmet Weinbar, Marvin's, Karin's Kneipe, the Ule, The Pub and the UmBAUbar. Between the two presentations, there will be enough time for those interested to switch to another of the participating pubs and bars. Admission is free and registration is not required. However, it is advisable to arrive early.

“Hirn vom Hahn” is organized by the Oldenburg Network for Science Communication (OLWIK). OLWIK is an association of science and research institutions in Oldenburg. It has set itself the task of making scientific work (even) more accessible to the public. To this aim, OLWIK organizes events and also produces the podcast “Hirn gehört: Oldenburger Wissensschnack” with researchers from Oldenburg and the region.

The event is sponsored by the Wirtschaftsförderung Oldenburg and the Gertrud and Hellmut Barthel Foundation.
